In Dr. Pittmans lab, researchers induce depression in a fish by keeping it drunk on ethanol for two weeks, then cutting off the supply, forcing it into withdrawal.

Science!

That sounds like bunk science. Like those studies with the monkeys and marijuana in the 70s.

Maybe unless you realize alcohol is a depressant and drinking it constantly for weeks will leave you depressed

I think tonight is going to be soy curls in a spicy sauce with a bunch of broccoli, lentils, and brown rice

it's clearly labeled as frozen dessert (see the B&Js posted recently) but we all know what it is

lots of what people call ice cream (probably most of what is purchased in the USA) is also legally ice milk. like dairy queen. but no one calls it ice milk

yeah they are usually just soybeans cooked with salt. not traditionally prepared with animal products

I like fresh boiled edamame

the dry stuff is good. soy is very nutrient dense so you gotta watch out eating dried soy stuff

ive actually been trying to lose some weight. ive done it before but i always put it back on. not following any specific diet but monitoring calories. I did a BMR calculator and it said I burn around 2900 calories a day so im shooting to eat 2,000 a day.

I should up my veggie intake because when prepared well they can be delicious(broccoli and brussels sprouts) and you can generally eat a ton(depening on how its prepared) for little calories.

actually raises a question i never understood.

I know people who have done low carb diets and lost weight, but they always act like "yeah i can eat all the meat i want!!" but wouldnt you not lose weight because you are taking in a lot of calories by eating tons and tons of meat. I only look at weight loss as calories consumed vs. burned so i dont understand any other way.

Fish are pretty complex

My brother has a beta and every time I see it I want to put the poor thing out of its misery.

Have you seen betas on display at the pet store? Half of them you can't even tell if they're dead or alive. Frankly, they might as well be both. They've all got mangled looking fins and some of them are just spacing out floating at the top.

People didn't really need to make an alcoholic fish to figure this out. Maybe they did, idk.

Well no shit you can't eat as much as you want. You might get a boost to metabolism, but weight loss is ultimately just energy burned vs enrgy consumed. That being said, being skinny doesn't mean you're healthy. You can go low carb or vegan and still have a terrible diet.

I wouldn't put too much stock into a calculator. Your metabolic rate can vary wildly based on genetics and diet. The trick to keeping weight off is making sustainable changes to your diet. Vitamins are an easy way to do that. While no powder can fully replace fresh produce, a greens supplement can go a long way toward meeting your daily dose of veggies.

many people that go on keto fail to lose weight by overdoing the calories, esp. with processed meats and cheese.

I genuinely worry that there will be a minor health crisis later following the animal-based keto dieting.

Theres the obvious issue that We cannot ask animals how they feel, says Dr. Diego A. Pizzagalli, the director of the Center For Depression, Anxiety and Stress Research at Harvard Medical School. Though researchers may find parallels in serotonin and dopamine fluctuations, neither fish nor rat can capture the entire spectrum of depression as we know it, says Dr. Pizzagalli.

There is a heated debate in the fish research community about whether anxious or depressed is a more appropriate term.

But what has convinced Dr. Pittman, and others, over the past ten years is watching the way the zebrafish lose interest in just about everything: food, toys, exploration just like clinically depressed people.

You can tell, said Culum Brown, a behavioral biologist at Macquarie University in Sydney who has published more than 100 papers on fish cognition. Depressed people are withdrawn. The same is true of fish.

The trigger for most domestic fish depression is likely lack of stimulation, said Victoria Braithwaite, a professor of fisheries and biology at Penn State University, who studies fish intelligence and fish preferences.

the alcohol part is a very minor aspect in the test and the article. fish appear to display depression symptoms and have similar neurochemistry to humans They may be a viable way to test future antidepressants, and they have now measured baseline depressed fish behavior to compare results. animal models can't exactly tell how they feel but fish can have their feelings easily observed.

There's a big difference between testing for health concerns vs. something like cosmetics too.

Found another local place that does Vegan offerings. Only a few on the menu. Lot more vegetarian offerings and their veggie burgers are not vegan. Still nice to see something! This mock chicken I tried hit the texture so well I thought it may have been meat. Chicken is usually more dry and overcooked though.

That's good. If you're considering vegetarian then easing into that kind of eating is better.

Yeah the largest issues are with beef and dairy. Cattle in general. I'm glad to see more dairy free options appearing.

But so many vegetarian things are also full of milk powder. Why?! I hope that trend changes.
