serious though, the average commute is very long and very few adults are finding it hard to have time to start a family. Some people have commutes for so long that they rent hotels for a week near their job and only go home on the weekends.

What would be a solution?

Start with the whole summer off school like Americans get. Give kids a chance to get out there and chill and socialize so they will actually have these skills later in life.

Second, improve telecommuting and let people work from home more often. Ideally, I think people should be in the office one day a month, but I work with people who are in the office even less because they live in a different state. This way, when people get off work, they are already home and have more time they can use for social activities and less time riding trains.

All that can be done without really changing any Japanese culture fundamentals.

You would have to break the culture of working long hours which isn't easy, because it's ingrained into the people. Japan has been trying different incentive programs to get people to start families and while they have had some success, they haven't really fixed the problem.

As long as Japan's aging population grows, there's going to be more demand for increased work from the smaller working population.

Sounds like a lot of American girls these days. No personality, nothing interesting to talk about, they only seem to care about what you're doing to make money and what you can provide for them.

It's not right to blame the older generations. I mean when we get down to it, we can blame the generations before them, and the generations before them. We can just say this is the result of technology and emphasis on capitalism and career, and the family unit element being ripped apart in developed worlds. And also social media becoming a big thing, and less and less people getting out and socializing normally. Result? Not as many births, and depression and suicide rates rising.

Japan refuses to give up on Keynesian Economics after 25 years of it not working, so the economy has never really recovered. A bunch of over-leveraged corporations should have been liquidated in the early 90s but the government and Bank of Japan didn't allow a real pullback to occur. It's hard to imagine the work culture improving in that environment.

Who knows what Japan would look like today if a reset was allowed to take place back then. It couldn't possibly be more depressing than how it looks now.

The issue isn't that there is an older population, it's that the older population is getting more and more expensive to take care of and the younger population isn't earning enough to take care of them.

In a sense, the biggest problem is the current ruling class political/mercantile and not the retired old folks.

Well, Japan is of course its own beast. I was mainly referring to western societies when it comes to social media. But I think corporate America has a lot of similar flaws like in Japan, too.

Also, another thing to touch upon is the lack of explicit gender roles. Women in developed countries have careers of their own, and don't really have a need to start a family or rely on a man for anything. When the sexes are blended like this, there's less dependency on the other, which leads to less families and births. Not to say gender equality is bad. But in a capitalistic world, it might not be ideal for a sustained utopia.
