Yep. The ACA hurt far more than it helped and it's time to go back to scratch. Something needs done but Obamacare was not the way. What needs to happen is something to reign in the out of control insurance and pharm companies, but politicians are far too deep in those pockets for that to happen.

Pretty simple. If you don't have enough insurance, you have to pay the government instead. Give money to insurance companies or we will take money from you.

If you're talking about the emergency room thing, emergency rooms won't turn people away even if they can't pay, and it has been that way a long time. It opens up the door to abuse, though.

Right, but the fact that so many people had either no insurance, or conditions that insurance wouldn't cover, and were forced to seek ER treatment which often goes uncompensated, is what causes the costs in the first part of your complaint to be high

It probably was really pretty sweet to have ESI if you were healthy before the ACA though. I get that complaint

"I don't understand where you got that idea from" is not a question. It's a statement. "Where did you get that idea" is an actual question.

Are you really going to play semantics right now?

It's a statement that's questioning something, and it's literally the same exact thing, minus a question mark. It's something that requires an answer that isn't exactly a question in if itself

Because we are old enough to remember what it was like before Obamacare.

That's the thing you kids forget: the situation was dire before the ACA. Everyone knew it. ACA is just a national version of Romney-care. A Republican Presidential candidate was the first guy in the country to pass this kind of legislation.

But Republicans were vehemently against Obama and spent 8 years fighting everything he did. Even when he introduced their own fucking idea. They have done their best to make it work as terribly as possible so they can call it a failure... And the people stilll overwhelmingly agree it's better than what we had before.

The solution to the ACA isn't to take money out of the system. It's to add money.

What needs to happen to actually reign in costs is quite a few things:

1. The garbage Bush legislation that prevents the government from negotiating for lower pharmaceutical prices needs to be repealed.

2. There needs to be a cap placed on end-of-life treatments, which are the majority of the U.S. healthcare expenditures. If the procedure will not lead to a significant improvement in either longevity or quality of life, doctors need to be required to refuse them. You can use fear mongering language like "death panels" if you want, but this is essential.

3. Malpractice litigation needs to be reformed. The Democrats have bogged down the system nonsense red tape that results in doctors ordering far more tests and recommending unnecessary procedures just to cover their asses and stave off malpractice lawsuits.

4. There needs to be a major PR campaign launched educating people about the difference between urgent care clinics and emergency rooms, and when to use one instead of the other.

I agree with 3 of the 4, especially 1 and 3, but I just can't get on board with 2. Specifically the "significant improvement in either longevity or quality of life" part, because who is to say what's significant? 6 months longer to live to spend more time with kids or grand kids can be hugely significant in some people's eyes. Death panels, and I will call them that, should not be a thing.

this is literally what the gop was talking about with death panels. it's actually worse, because they were complaining about countries like england, which don't cap medical expenditures per person, just analyze treatments to see if they're permissible in general in terms of quality life years or whatever

but yeah old dying people are what cost us the most

Who the heck is this "we" and why should "we" continue to dump more money into healthcare that sucks for everyone except the uninsurable?

This isn't really complicated. The ACA, in a simplistic sense, is a program that helps people pay for their health insurance.

The problem is that premiums are too high.

How do you solve that problem?

Do you cancel the program and give people no help paying for their insurance?

Do you take money out and have the program help pay for insurance less than before?

Do you add money and have the program help more?

Or to look at it another way...

X is the premium, Y is how much the ACA helps and Z is the actual cost of insurance.

X+Y = Z

Lowering Y will only make X higher. The only way to lower X is to raise Y and/or lower Z.
