It's been racist for a long time, it just doesn't get much traction because there aren't as many Inuits.

Makes sense, what would be the correct term to refer to these people?

While that's the origin of why it's considered offensive, it's actually untrue.

Depends on which people you are talking about. Inuit is used for quite a few people who used to be called Eskimo, althought several other people dislike it.

Oh thank goodness. I did some research. Inuit doesn't inculde all people under the Eskimo banner - it's just some.
Eskimo is actually the proper term for all people.
It's essentially complaining about calling aboriginies black instead of aboriginies.

Doing some more research I discovered it's only offensive in some places and rather, Inuit is offensive to certain people in certain places.

So, it depends on what country you're in. Very interesting.

Don't know where you did your research, but;

https://www.uaf.edu/anlc/resources/inuit-eskimo/

Although the name "Eskimo" is commonly used in Alaska to refer to all Inuit and Yupik people of the world, this name is considered derogatory in many other places because it was given by non-Inuit people and was said to mean "eater of raw meat."

So unless you are from Alaska, it is considered a pejorative.
