I would have made a poll asking who was better in the 80s, MJ or Madonna but I guarantee MJ would have won in a landslide.

So why wasn't Madonna as good as MJ in the 80s?

As someone who grew up in the 80s and remembers most of it, Madonna was absolutely huge. Michael Jackson was, too, but I would say Madonna was the female equivalent during the 80s. Michael just kept growing and growing, breaking barriers and ensuring his popularity due to his "mystique" if you will. Not to mention his inimitable dance moves.

Debbie Gibson, Cyndi Lauper, Whitney, Paula Abdul, etc were stars and couldn't hold a candle to Madonna. Same goes for MJ and male pop artists.
