SMB3 vs SMW

World here. Yoshi was my bro, Cape > Tail, more varied bosses, freaking Magikoopas turning blocks into freaking enemies, Star Road and Special zone, spinjump, secret exits, Ghost Houses, Switch Palaces and ofc the Derpface Lava Monster.

Though 3 is a fine game and does have a nice showing with airships, nicely-hidden secrets and world 4.

Yoshi was technically a glorified goomba's shoe, tbh. The idea came from SMB3, so there's that ;)

Actually the idea came from SMB1.

Miyamoto had intended to give Mario a rideable animal companion in the original SMB but couldn't because of tehnical limitations.

Damn that would've been awesome. I bet someone has already created a hack of SMB1 (with world engine?) that uses Yoshi in SMB1.

I like Super Mario World much better.

I feel like Super Mario Bros. 3 had more solid design in general; however, SMB3 had its share of bullshit maze levels that were beginner's traps.

Though Super Mario World had better gameplay and replayability, and the only weird level I remember is Tubular.

Someone was able to put Yoshi in SMB3 with a rom hack. Not sure about SMB1 though.

I can only think of one "maze" level in SMB3. (those thin blue pipes). Even so, there's really only one general direction to go - it's not like you have to backtrack several screens.

Some people have made HORRIBLE maze levels in Super Mario Maker - which are utterly ridiculous.

World, because save function. Which ultimately made the game MUCH easier... but playing SMB3, without warp whistles, from start to finish, is just a very long game session.

SMW also featured a lot of side paths and map branches with multiple ways to "beat" a given level, and the addition of the 4 block palaces allows for variable difficulty giving way more control to the player.

In terms of power ups, I think SMB3 did it better with frog, tanooki, and boot in the mix. The colored yoshis saw about the same frequency and did about the same role.

SMW by far for me. Although, SMB3 contains some of the only decent memories that I have of my father, along with Mario Kart 64.

Gotta go SMW because, while they are both excellent, the Overworld Theme from SMW is one of my favorite songs to sing to myself. My favorite song to hum or sing is the Yoshi's Island map theme, but sadly that game is fresh fisted ass.

i agree the lack of save function hurts the replayability of the original NES game. All-Stars fixed this, though, and has saves built-in to all of the original games, IIRC.

3

I don't think I've ever hyped a game up so much only to have the game surpass my expectations. SMB 3 was my life the year it released

Just off the top of my head I had: t-shirts, watches, video tapes, strategy guides, pencils, happy meal toys, valentine cards, comics, stickers, coloring books, story books, and who knows what else.

Its a perfect game imo

I grew up with both and World hands down. After playing 3 over and over again SMW came out and blew my mind. I never touched 3 again until years and years later. 3 does have better powerups but World blows it away in every other aspect.
