It feels like GRRM has always intended for readers to find her likeable, but I only liked her in the first book.

A Dance With Dragons is pretty much "watch this idiot make bad decisions and slip towards Targaryen craziness": the book. The show seems to push Dany as a likeable character way more than the books.

Agreed.

Goes all the way back to book two even in Qorth.

I always got the feeling GRRM wrote her specifically to slip into madness.

I'm in the camp that thinks (read: hopes) that she is the big bad before/during/after the long night.

When I see topics like this I usually see far fewer on TCs side and more on mine/yours. At least from book readers.

The show pretty much backed her 100%

I am a book reader.

And how what exactly is your side, it's completely unclear.

GRRM clearly attempts to paint her with some semblance of likability and heroic traits, but fails completely, because she doesn't fail all the time in spite of her constant stupidity. She gets what she wants most of the time. Armies and dragons fail in to her lap. She gets tons of followers too.

I disagree with the bolded. The rest is dead on though.

Edit: actually maybe before her marriage (when she was helpless) she was alright. After that she became entitlement personified.

As an aside, I liked the juxtaposition of "the Unburnt" title in the standard spiel and Jon coming back from the fucking dead.

I'm disappointed that Jon hushed up Davos when he was giving his tirade because I wanted to hear "You talk about being unburnt? This man came back from the dead to fight against the dead."

I know they're important to the plot, but I got to the point where I just started skipping Bran's chapters in Dance because they were such a chore to get through.

Brienne's chapters in Feast were also really dull because you know it's a waste of time and she's not going to find what she's looking for.

The show still carries him relatively faithfully with the "arrogant douchenozzle brought low by events both within and without his control" bit. Despite some hiccups, he got off much better than poor Stannis.

The major difference is that the show obviously can't go into his unspoken thoughts the way the books do with the limited third person schtick, so we don't get the luxury of viewing the full extent of his post-hand mental shift.

Yes, definitely keep reading. Book 3 is the best in the series imo. It's one great development after another pretty much all the way through. I'm really looking forward to rereading that one again.

I'd say she's actually a bit more tolerable in the books because even though she has all the same bullshit going on, it doesn't feel so much like she's being pushed out as the main hero you're supposed to cheer for.

I think she's like 18 in the show (at the start, anyway) and 13 in the books.

That's one of the changes the show made that I really don't mind at all. Everyone is way too damn young in the books, and GRRM has admitted it himself.

The complete lack of anything resembling that plotline in the show leads me to believe that he isn't going to have a particularly great impact on the overall plot of the series.

Also, cool it on the spoilers, guys. We've got people ITT that are looking to read the books.
