it was good but it had it's flaws i won't lie one of which was that the movie was promoted on television as this big revenge story

watching the anime i never viewed it as something that could be or should be taken in that route

another thing i felt like the setting was trying too hard to be futuristic

I didn't get into the series until Stand Alone Complex. Overall I enjoyed the movie nonetheless. My only real beef with the movie was how it seems these cyborgs were a new concept when in the manga/anime series its the norm.

i imagine they went the route of cybernetics being a fairly new thing because they only had 106 minutes to work with and showing a world far ingrained into a cyber world probably would have been harder to seel to a movie goer who has never seen the anime or read the manga....also major's angry revenge plot seemed OC for her

It's not that far off from the original movie from the 80s. Hideo Kojima actually summarized it really well: "The original is about 'what does it mean to be a human?' vs the new movie that just asks 'Who am I?"" It's roughly the same-ish story with some lovingly recreated action scenes from the original but it's simpler and a even the original is a bit dated in a world that is a hair's breadth away from being cyberized for real.

i just kinda feel like they might have gone a bit too far with the cyber world setting we don't need giant hologram billboards to tell us that it's the future

that's like saying unless you have people with lasers strapped to their heads flying around with jetpacks and going to the bathroom in another dimension we won't know it's the future

I hated the movie. They revealed who the villain was in the first 2 minutes, and the whole movie played out as cookie cutter as a Saturday morning cartoon from the 80s. There was no philosophy to be found at all in the movie. No discussions on when does a man become a machine and when does a machine become a man. Pazu, Borma, and Ishikawa never ever got their names mentioned, yet there was some random made up for the movie lady who was with Batou a few times. THey turned Togusa from being a rookie Japanese family man into a 50 year old Chinese drone that also had Ishikawa's computer abillities. Lastly, no Tachikomas.

I can tell the director is a fan of the franchise as he had all of his favorite scenes in the movie that were stitched together by the most basic, artificial premise imaginable. There was no suspense or anything. Oh, and Scarlett Johanssen can not act when she is by herself. She should never be the main lead as she is a supporting actress. The only ones who seemed like they were giving it their all were Beat Takeshi and the dude who played Batou (despite screwing up his backstory).

Other than Aramaki, the best thing about it was the music. That at least sounded like it could have been from Ghost in the Shell.

I'd admit, I had to look up the cast later to find out who those other folks were. The extra female character was confusing too.

Lastly, no Tachikomas.

I was surprised by this, or lack of.

The manga is 89. My mistake. You can go back to having your orgasm about someone being slightly wrong on the internet if you really must.

Pretty much what I expected. Plus did the original film have Tachikomas? I don't remember them.

Those ones are the best!!!

I really want to see the movie. I have everything else on DVD or BR already, and my taste is a little different (the Arise series is my favourite).

No, but this movie is not an adapation of the original film as the core basis is the Indiividual Eleven story from 2nd Gig and those had Tachikomas.
