Well...I understand that since it's been said way too many times and with most of them being insincere about it, it's quite annoying and may have the opposite effect on a patient.

But also look at it from their point of view. What ELSE can they say? I mean, really?

If you saw a child having a scrape on the leg, the decent part of you would try to console the child; even if it means saying things like: "Ssh....it's going to be all right." or something along those lines.

It's either they tell you to relax and don't stress or if you prefer that they don't say anything at all.

After all, they don't want to be in there with you any more than you do. So it's not just about you. They don't like saying those things to patients because at times, patients take offence and lash out at them for nothing. I know because I have friends who confide in me regarding these things; nurses and doctors.

We just need to be more patient and try to see the positive side of things rather than trying to find offence in everything....

Just a thought.

Well you really don't want to clench when they're back there with a slippery, gloved finger so what do you want them to say instead?

This sums up what I get. Also:
"It's just Anxiety. Once you find the root of the problem it'll fade". Well no shit Sherlock.

Give advice and options of how to relax and/or find the root of the problems you're having would be a start. They are the Doctors afterall.

I understand that. Patients consult doctors for diagnosis and treatment of what ails them. Of course they would give advice on their treatment. But this isn't about that.

The point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't matter what a doctor or staff says (regarding the relaxing thing and not the diagnosis or treatment).

There are patients that just refuse to be consoled or comforted. They find it offensive and intrusive.

This is because the patient already has a preconceived notion that doctors and staff don't know how to make them comfortable and that the phrases they are spouting out are just scripted lines and are insincere.

And for the staff's point of view, they won't bother to try harder because they think the patient would react the same way. There are patients that not just lash out, but they become verbally abusive and even attack staff... :(((

So the issue is on both sides sadly...

I got that feeling from the last Doctor I visited. He just didn't seem to give a shit.

Sure referring you to one of those if needed could be helpful. The likes of CBT is apparently a good way of dealing with anxiety. I wouldn't know though as the doctor I visited refused to refer me to it at this point. I'll keep going back though until they do so eh.

If it is that important, why not go to a different doctor?

Yep. Another opinion is indeed welcome so that's something I plan on doing.
