Why not? It can only help you.
There's a difference between memorizing helpful math and not being properly explained to the mechanisms of later, more advanced concepts. If you need to do mental math to figure out what 8x7 is or something then you're gonna have a bad time. It's not like kids don't also know how to arrive at 56 the long way. --- ... The best way to teach math is to instruct them in the basics first so that they fully understand the underlying concepts. After that, only then can they also be made to learn the most commonly used shortcuts such as the multiplication table.

It depends on the student. Memorizing the tables can help some students but if someone is great with mental math and bad with memorization it's better to just let them be and nurture their strengths.
