Obviously anything like this will largely come down to a popularity contest as the only bands or artists that are going to get the majority vote are one's that are well recognized. I think a lot of people end up not voting for who their actual favorite would be simply because they don't have any chance of winning and feel like it would be a wasted vote, so instead vote for whoever their favorite that actually has a chance of winning is. Also I think people feel more comfortable sticking to what they know, which with older bands their legacy is either entirely or largely written by now. I think people feel more comfortable voting for someone who's discography is already largely laid out there and are more likely to vote for someone like Metallica where the majority of their discography is meh to bad just because they have those 5 great albums rather than vote for some more recent band with 2-3 good albums and an uncertain future since you have no way of knowing if they'll stay good. And when consuming music it's easier to disregard the duds in an older band and just listen to what's well regarded. If you're listening to music now and you like a band, wait years for them to release a new album, and then it sucks, you feel that a lot more than someone who has their entire discography available to you at once where you can focus on an entire careers worth of highs and ignore the lows.
