I think its rude to checkout with headphones in, but I honestly dont care too much. So, I told him something(take your card out of the chip reader, i think).

and the kid waits like 20 seconds, takes an earbud out and goes "WAT?"

im pretty sure whatever I had said by that point was irrelevant. I kinda just said "oh, nothing"

Ultimately a pointless story but I do find it amusing how long had passed between me saying what I said and the kid going "wat" like that.

It's a pet peeve of mine when people talk on the phone while checking out. I don't even work retail, just find it rude. I'd never say anything, though. I'm sure plenty of cashiers don't mind. They probably welcome the break from the same small talk they've had all day long. (How many times a day do people talk about the weather with you, TC?)

Just rubs me the wrong way, is all. The headphones thing would annoy me, too.
