But if someone was an idiot and wore a Hitler shirt then holy shit the world would end.

I mean they are all assholes that are responsible for millions of deaths but seriously why does no one bat an eye if a guy is wearing a shirt with Stalin's face on it?

Is it really a common thing though? Like I'm sure there's at least 1 or 2 per college but that pales in comparison to the amount of people that do not. Also how do you know there aren't people that get triggered by it?

Pretty sure Stalin was responsible for way more innocent people dying than Hitler. He was also in power longer than Hitler and his Gulags were essentially concentration death camps and he didn't even care or showed any remorse for his actions.

Guy was a monster.

I think that's an exaggeration since you have to count a lot more than just the Holocaust for Hitler, but they were both pretty bad. Hitler is more associated with genocide and ethnic cleansing though which is why he is perceived as worse.

The association is purely an issue of coverage and the fact that Stalin was our ally at the time we won the war and contributed the most to defeating Hitler.

Stalin also conducted actual genocide and it was every bit as bad as the holocaust.

it's true that there was a famine in the ukraine during that time - there was a famine in the whole USSR

there was a drought

Stalin recognized that he would need more grain, so he tried to buy the grain from the kulaks - the petit-bourgeois landowners - for less money than what they would have received from selling to the US

in response, the kulaks burned their grain

it was during a famine, and these people were burning food

The Holodomor wasn't caused by a drought. It was caused by deliberately blocking food from being harvested by stealing the farms away from the peasants who owned them for the government.

A little bit, yeah.

Hitler is more infamous, rightly or wrongly. I guess one way of looking at it is that Stalin and Mao's crimes were mostly limited to their particular region/country, whereas Hitler's obviously went beyond his own borders, largely causing a World War, etc.

It's like, the shit that's going on in Syria, North Korea, Yemen and even Saudi Arabia, as long as it doesn't affect us too much, we tolerate it to an extent (certainly in SA). If NK attacked SK for example, then we'd care a bit more.

I wasn't aware Stalin or Mao shirts were popular. As said, you're more likely to see Che shirts or Lenin, since Che is associated more with High Schoolers. I've also seen some Asian dude who wasn't Mao on a few posters.

Anyways, Stalin and Mao are known faces for a political ideology that is popular on college campuses, unlike Fascism which is directly attacked in that community. While communist ideas are romanticized, there's not much to work with Fascism. Especially with Nazis who kinda excluded majority of the world, and that doesn't fly in a diverse populace.
