Are you surprised it bombed?

It appears that war of the planet of the apes bombed considering it's massive 150M budget and only made 240M worldwide so far despite being the best of the series...

Ghostbusters had a 144M budget and made only 229M worldwide and that was a bomb so it appears war of the planet of the apes did as well....

surprising considering it made 500M just in foreign sales for the last planet of the apes...

How is this a bomb? It's already made $90M more than production budget after 3 weeks. This film will end up making over $400M.

Movies generally need to make at least twice the budget to be considered a success. Also foreign sales contribute less to overall profitability.

i guess you didn't read my ghostbusters bit about it being a bomb for Sony..

and let's not forget that it's been out for a MONTH now and most movies have to make at least twice or more to make it's money back

The second one was the best one. If this is the end of the franchise it ended on a rather weak note.

I wouldn't be surprised if it needed more than double it's budget. There was a lot of marketing for this movie.

Considered a success by whom? Who's coming up with these arbitrary thresholds?

I just can't see how a 90M profit isn't a success. I mean, I guess if the standard is to raise your expectations as double the production cost... But to me that's silly.

as i understand it production costs only paint half the picture since it's only the making of the actual movie.

after that comes the simultaneous objectives of letting people know the movie is finished, when they can watch it and how excited they should be for it.

something like getting the entire cast to show up at comic-con isn't actually out of goodwill or anything nor is it free and those costs can easily rack up.

It's risk vs reward. I don't know what the failure rate is for movies, but I can understand that 90m profit on an investment of 200m wouldn't be that awesome.

Summer movies have taken an overall hit from last year.

Tickets cost like $17 in NYC now. There's way better shit to do for the money, especially when movies hit home video in like 2-3 months and then you can buy the shit for $10.

This means we demand higher quality, which is good. Only good movies or extremely hyped shit will get the crazy numbers. This is the US though. It seems worldwide movies in theaters are becoming more popular.

Are people really saying this? I thought it was easily the weakest of the trilogy. Honestly, some parts were so cheesy I felt embarrassed in the theater. The first two were fantastic though.

Shut the fuck up, Duckbear.

A bomb is not making its budget back.

This is a small financial disappointment. Also, its made $280 million worldwide so far and could reach 300 by the end of its run.

There's a couple of things to consider when it comed to determining whether a movie has a bombed or not.

1) The "film budget" only covers the cost of actually making the movie not marketing. Global marketing usually equals the cost of the film budget. A film that has a budget of 150m likely cost the studio about 300m.

2) The money the movies makes includes the that Cinemas make. Cinemasusually get half the money from sales. That means if a movie cost a studio about 300m the movie likely has to gross 600m to make even.

Edit: I should point out that that the movie gross usually only includes ticket sales and not money from merchandising or from video/dvd/bluray/streaming.

Rule of thumb: take the cost of making the film and then double it. That's usually the break even point after taking into account advertising.

That being said, I would agree that "bombing" is the wrong term. A bomb to me is a film that doesn't even come close to reouping the investment, not for a film that falls a little short or was less profitable then expected.
