es like my bluray player does.

But nope, have to buy multiple giant boxes to play them.

I don't mind repurchasing things. I had to repurchase my VHS movies on DVD/bluray/streaming. But I don't want to have 10 boxes setup with all these different controllers to be able to play everything.

And I don't want to pirate on a PC.

'Good games' and 'console exclusives' aren't necessarily the same thing and for someone so against PC gaming, it sounds like a PC is exactly what you want and that it does most things your consoles can't do. Be more open minded-there are a lot of great PC games and most are on all platforms now anyway (or will be soon enough).
Everything up to the PS3/360 games can be emulated by a halfway decent PC and you can play the games directly from the original discs (unless they're cartridge based and it's up to you if you're ok with playing ROMs of games you physically own. Personally, I have no issue with it and haven't used most of my old consoles in years but still play most of the games).
Your beloved current gen aren't even backwards compatible for the most part so you can just do what most ppl do and keep everything on a HDMI switch so you don't have to keep unplugging things all the time but you will be stuck with a few consoles and controllers floating around, that's just the choice you've made by primarily using consoles.

A lot of games that weren't 1st party are available on PC, either through Steam or GoG. And they are 100% legal, no pirating. Hell, pretty much the entire Neo Geo library is availble on Steam now.

If you are talking 1st party or exclusive games, well then suck it up buttercup.

It's better now than it's ever been before, but it's still not the perfect system that "PC Master Race" assholes love to fellate it as.

It's a poor analogy, because not only are most of the shows and movies that were originally released on Betamax also available on newer formats, but tape transfer is a thing.

Now, if I could copy PS1 games over onto PS4 discs and play them perfectly on my PS4? Then it would be a perfect analogy. It would also be world-class awesomesauce.

That being said, even "backward compatibility" isn't necessarily a valid alternative (should anyone wish to bring that up), because at least the way Microsoft handles it, it's mostly just shitty emulation that only works for some of the most popular games anyway (ie, I couldn't play about half of my XBox games on my 360 and have them work exactly the way they were supposed to, if at all - I'm still kind of annoyed that I can't play Invisible War on 360 period).

It WOULD be kind of nice to have a single console that could play multiple format games across multiple generations as a single unit, though it's also something that would never, ever happen due to rights issues and the level of technical complexity (or the need for multiple disc drives and cartridge slots built in).

Such as? If they were on PS2/XBOX or earlier, emulation works fine unless you have a really old/crap PC. That's not the technology's fault-if you want to play a newer console game, you'd have to cough up for the new console, same deal here.

Such as? I've never had problems with it, it's got a lot of my old games working again (the ones that haven't been re-released etc. obviously). Some haven't aged terribly well but that's just the way it goes. YMMV but RTFM.

It was also a joke but the analog to your tape transfer is emulation, funnily enough.

Or you could use your PC with a PS4 controller like the rest of us already do...the games even look better (PS2 games more so) and that will run on just about any PC equal to or more powerful than a raspberry pi...
...and if you'd even tried google, https://hyperkin.com/Retron5/ would be the obvious choice and anything disc based up to PS2/Xbox works great in emulators (with progress being made on a PS3 emulator recently).
