Not all practioners of slavery were evil people.

Perhaps not.

But owning slaves is an inherently evil thing to do. So how do you reason that.

Owning slaves was a major part of the economy on every continent, and people at the time (at least up until the abolitionist movement) did not view it as "evil." And that includes the black landowners who also owned slaves. The idea of personal liberty is a relatively modern one, and the majority of people who have ever existed on this planet did not share those values.

So the reasoning is that you're falling guilty to the fallacy of presentism. You're imposing 21st century social norms and values on a time period where those are inappropriate.

I'm hearing you. But I feel that there was some dissent against slavery, even before abolitionist sentiments. As far as I'm aware, Quakers had disavowed slavery on moral grounds well before the 1800s.

I know that no matter how much anti-slavery sentiment there was in the country, it wouldn't have changed the south because of the economy. But isn't fair to say that if some cultures realized how unjust it was at the time that we can at least say that "presentism" loses a little ground when we're talking about slavery?

There are literally people defending slave owners and those who fought for slavery ITT. What the fuck.

The topic is about Lee. If someone said you and your family are traitors, join us and kill them, what would you do? I'd side with my family, as Lee did.

LOL. Is this real life? He literally sided with people wanting to own slaves, it had nothing to do with people telling him to "kill his family". You're implying he had no soldiers to fight for him and had his wife and kids sent out to fight in the war, which is all kinds of lol. Just stop.

Lincoln approached Lee to and asked him to command the Union army to fight the rebels. Lee's family, and land, was in Virginia, which was in rebellion. Make sense now?

Yea keep trying to justify it all you want. The point is he's not someone who should be celebrated the way he is today. Hiding behind "we respect him as a leader and a fighter! My history!" Is complete BS from the neo nazis and alt right and you know that. Stop playing these games.

yeah, it's not like we have an entire state of people who decided to leave Virginia over their secession or anything

not to mention that other US soldiers in Virginia, outside of West Virginia, did not turn traitor

So we're meant to condemn him in history solely because he on the losing side, despite not doing the same with people like the Red Baron, Che, and fucking Rommel? Do you understand how dense that sounds?

Yes, and Lincoln commanded Lee to go to his family's house and attack them while they were eating dinner and attack them right? LMAO. Once again just stop, his family had nothing to do with this, he had soldiers.

Lee was a soldier in the US army. They weren't his soldiers, they were the union's. You think that was medieval Europe where lords held armies? Lee knew it was coming to war. That means soldiers killed, innocents forced to leave their homes, crops destroyed. Possibly his estates, his family.

No we're meant to look back and hindsight and treat these things with the knowledge we have now. We don't have to condemn him but stop pretending like the alt right and neo Nazis aren't hiding behind "my history!"...it's their excuse to wave racist flags.

No one said anything about condemning him. He shouldn't be placed on a pedestal either. Put his statue in a museum. We don't need to praise him or what he fought for simply because it was part of history.

Watch the trolls ignore what you (and others) have been saying.

And oh yeah, here's a link that gives a general (lol....) rundown on Lee.

Just really sucks that, in order for some semblance of reunification after the Civil War to happen, the goddamn Lost Cause myth had to take hold.

Just because some are using it as an excuse to do wrong doesn't mean it's automatic guilt by association. If fucking Solidus Snake was real are we gonna suddenly tear down all the George Washington statues because he modeled his ideologies after him? Prolly not. It should be the same for Lee, especially when in comparison he was apparently a stand-up guy compared to Grant, and yet only one of those is completely vindicated by history.

Lee would have warned and moved his family first, duh. This has nothing to do with is family. You would do anything to defend him huh? Absolutely disgusting. You know his family had nothing to do with this.

I don't know why I bothered arguing facts with someone that's obviously ignorant, uneducated, and biased. You feel the way you do, I disagree, and the facts prove I'm correct. Pick up a book some time. You may learn something.

Also Ortega obviously Lincoln would have known know Robert would refuse to serve in his army anyways if his family were hurt, so obviously he would be given time to get them to safety, so again, this has nothing to do with Lee trying to protect his family, so again, just stop.

For the record, asking people to stop arguing automatically places you in a position of weakness. I state facts, you make nothing but assumptions. You literally have nothing to back your argument.

Lol no it doesn't, we've had enough of your bullshit, I'm trying to help you out by pointing out to you that you should stop making silly arguments that everyone knows are wrong. You have nothing to back up your argument, Lincoln knows that Lee would not serve under him if his family got hurt (because common sense) so your argument is really stupid.

"Because common sense". "Obviously". Strong factual evidence there.

Everything I've stated ITT has historical backing, so you're wrong in every sense. Just because you don't agree with or don't like the past doesn't make it untrue.

LOL. So here's what you think would have gone down had Lee been bent on supporting Lincoln.

Lincoln: Hey wanna serve in our army?

Lee: What about my family?

Lincoln: Well obviously you'll have to attack them too, you are not under any circumstances allowed to warn them or move them somewhere safe.

Lee: Sounds like a great deal to me!

Not a chance. Lee was racist, and a traitor, get over it.

Seems you were party to that conversation personally, then? Unless you overheard this, I'd even support having read verified manuscripts stating this, this has no factual backing.

Lee was a traitor to the USA. And a slave owner. I never said otherwise. Lee had his reasons, which was my point in the start. Just further proves that you are too biased to consider facts that don't confirm your narrative. "Obviously", and "because common sense" do not make something factual. You literally made that up to fit your narrative.

People slurp his nuts and slurp white supremacy because they are so pathetically inadequate that they cannot succeed unless everyone who isn't just like them is in a yoke.

No matter what reasons you conjure up for the cause of the civil war all the characters involved are assholes and traitors to the human race. The fact is that slavery should have been abolished from the moment the line "all men were created equal" was written. All Americans were complicit in the act of oppression. The founding fathers were white supremacists who called themselves patriots while their countrymen were enslaved by other countrymen. Traitors to their declaration and traitors to the human race.

No one gives a fuck what Robert e lee felt he did the deed he must reap what he sew. If he was as brilliant as nut slurpers say he was he would been far more effective in facilitating peace and saving the lives of those he feltmore important than himself on the union side ending the rebellion sooner.

The fact is there are very few American influencers who deserve to be in a pantheon of positive humanity. They've all bargained with racists at the expense of the oppressed
