It's reasonable for a company to fire someone if they believe that person's continued employment brings harm to the company.

More or less, nobody is ever being fired for thoughts. They are being fired for behavior. Dude could have had his opinions and thoughts, if he didn't behave in a way that both made internal employees feel uncomfortable, but also generate bad press for the company.

This situation is tricky, but at the fundamental level, it comes down to what an employer has the right to fire their employee for.
