Current Events > So, cops checked me out to make sure I wasn't black.

Yesterday evening I was walking home from the grocery. It's usually hot these days but yesterday evening was a bit chilly so I was wearing a hoodie.

I almost never wear hoodies, it's not a style for me, it's comfortable to wear when it's a bit cold but not cold enough for winter coats.

Anyway, I'm walking on the sidewalk and a police car is coming from behind me, going in the same direction that I'm walking.

The car slows down to a crawl as they get near me just enough for the cops to look at me. When they get close enough to me, they just speed up back to normal speed and drive off.

It feels like they slowed down next to me just enough to see my face and, when they saw that I was white, they left. Seriously.

And also, between the grocery and my place there's a small batch of low-cost housing for the poor. Not exactly a place of "high crime" but there's been some drug busts there. Almost all the people who live there are haitians. I was already a bit past the low cost housing when the cops were there but it was just a couple of blocks away.

So, yeah... I'm sure the cops were totally checking to see if I was black. They saw the hoodie from behind and all. I guess because I'm not black they were satisfied that the bag I was carrying was probably groceries.

exactly this.

the other day I had 4 different cops get behind me within a matter of like 15 minutes. Couldn't be that it was not the honda crv they were looking for, no, they were just making sure I wasn't black.

You're probably right but it was just an impression.

It's the first time this ever happened to me, and it just happened to be that one time I'm walking outside in the evening with a hoodie.
