cause of war
North Korea trying to reunite Korea by invading South Korea.

who was involved
North & South Korea and their respective allies: China for the North, and the US & a UN-led coalition for the South

what happened?
(1) North Korea invaded the South, conquered most of it;
(2) USA and UN coalition intervene to help the South, push North Koreans out of South and then occupy most of the North;
(3) China intervenes to help the North, pushes US/UN out of North

effects
Lots of people die, borders stay the same as before war

is this why Korea divided?
No, it was divided before the war. Korea's divided because it was controlled by Japan since 1910, and when Japan was defeated, it was liberated by the Allies. Like Germany, 1/2 of it was occupied by the Soviets and the other 1/2 by the USA. The Soviets occupied the North and set up a Communist pro-Soviet government. The Americans set up a pro-western government in the South. After the US and Soviet occupation ended, there were 2 rival governments in Korea who couldn't agree on reunion. The Korean War was basically the North Korean government's attempt to use their army to reunite Korea under their rule.

@prince_leo got basically all of it.

Just wanted to add that China interfered to help the north because they were concerned that American forces would not stop at Korea and invade China afterwards.

Cool beans!

What lead to the end of the war?

As I understand it, the US involvement amounted to "WE'RE HERE TO GET COMMUNISM OUT OF YOUR BACKYARD...okay, we're done, have a nice day."

And then everything went to shit again afterwards because we didn't hang around to make sure things had actually been stabilized.

Thats probably Vietnam you're thinking of, not Korea. The US has never left South Korea and we are still legally at war with North Korea. No permanent peace agreement has ever been signed.
