Britain is part of Europe, dufus.

Oops, my bad. x_x

So he's 1 1/2 of a person until more clarification is provided.

He was saying the other two things were from Europe as well.

So 1/4 Japanese, 3/4 from separate countries in Europe, one being Britain.

This

I will have to open up volume 13 again to check the details but that is where that was

Why do people get so upset about race/ethnicity changes?

i think people just want an accurate portrayal of the thing they loved. so when there is an obvious change, the red flags start waving. at least that's my opinion.

Yeah, if it's an improvement, people will generally come to accept it, like how Nick Fury is Samuel L. Jackson now in the main timeline, or whatever you want to call it. Sometimes mixing it up adds something, these days it's mostly "let's be progressive and make sure to check off all the diversity boxes!" There's a reason nobody ever took the BK Kids Club very seriously :P

Pretty much. More to the point though... They're already skating on thin ice just by making it live action. Fans of the show and manga are gonna be wary enough about having it simply changed medium and considering stuff like Dragonball: Evolution and Avatar, it's safe to say that it's not unwarrented.

i think the problem isn't that L's black it's that he's more loud and bombastic than the original

L is suppose to be a quiet in the shadows investigator who didn't reveal himself to the public and put out a decoy for Kira to see if he truly was what he said he was

this guy just runs out onto a podium wearing a hoodie and doesn't give a crap

At any rate, it's an hour and a half long movie. Large swaths of the story will be cut, and the remainder will be butchered. L being black is insignificant compared to this.

Not really, no.

Better?

The benefit is that he's a dead-ringer for the character. It always annoys me when we have adaptations where the actor doesn't look like the character they're portraying and, in a worst-case scenario, the creators saying, "Fuck this, let's cast a completely different race in the slight chance it might attract added viewers from said race or to look more progressive. Who the fuck cares about this franchise anyway?"

Nick Fury was already black in the Ultimates continuity so there was more leeway among fans and, for casuals, Nick Fury was a lesser-known character. Plus it's Samuel L Jackson. You always get some leeway with Samuel L Jackson.

They should have cast him as L then.

This actually reminds me of the adaptation of the Percy Jackson books (which I admittedly haven't seen). In the novels, the best friend is a nerdy nature loving sissy. In the films they made him black, and from what I could tell from the previews his character was changed into "goofy black best friend". I do think to some extent directors use an actor's race to convey a character archetype. But that's on the film maker's, not the actor's race.

Not sure that's what NMB means considering that he's seemingly mentioning the two ideas as being unconnected, but feel free to get offended.

He would have been better-suited to the role than the current choice, despite the clear age issue. Plus the pun would have been at least partly appreciated.

Course he would have. Because he's Samuel L Jackson. Dude can take a purple lightsaber and make it look badass.

Edit: That might actually make him bad for the role. Since his innate BA would make L into a different character just because he's the one playing him.
