Oh and everyone knows Kwikset is a shitty, budget lock. Get Schlage if you want somepeace of mind (though every lock can be broken into, so multiple layers of security is always recommended).

Exactly.

Along with the lock company if they indeed did make a lock that was faulty

The fuck are you people on about. The lock has literally one job in it's entire existence. The singular purpose for which someone would buy a lock is to keep people from getting somewhere. It didn't do that. The company who made it only had to make a lock that would work, and they didn't. It's their fault.

No. It's to reduce the chance people get past by a reasonable amount. The questions the lawsuit will determine is firstly did this lock do that? Secondly if it didn't who's fault was it?

My auntie runs a locksmith company.

She can get through the toughest lock the company has in under 30 seconds and that's when she's under the effects of a medicinal drug that's probably still against the tos to name.

Using her tools, i was able to get through it in a few minutes after figuring out the sweet spot. It's a pretty glaring one that barely even needs to have any raking going on.

According to the article, the suit claims the lock was made from materials, that weren't strong enough to be used.

When I bought my house and installed new locks I got some kwikset because I liked their looks. I took the locks to a locksmith and he wouldn't work on kwikset because he said they were truly inferior quality and he didn't want to be associated with them. He said schlage is entry level for locks to work how you expect a lock to work.

Also Home Depot does installations so they may have been the installer, hence their inclusion on the suit.

Presumably the lock was engaged when he kicked in the door and broke said lock. It's kinda the basis for the entire case

I don't really know much about locks or anything about her specific lock but lots of cheaper ones can easily be broken by a kick, and shit depending on the quality of the frame as well in some cases it's not hard to just break through the wood itself with a kick. But I'm not sure if this one was advertised as some heavy duty one or not so I don't really know if she has a case or not because there's more information needed or if this is a justified case. The cynic in me will assume that everyone sucks and that the woman is trying to make money on a horrible thing that happened to her that wasn't really anyone's fault but the POS who did it, but the optimist in me hopes that it's not really about the money but the locks are indeed faulty and she's suing to make nobody else gets an unreasonably unsecure lock that can be broken easier than reasonably expected or that it isn't falsely advertised or anything.

Pretty much. If that lock was cheap and not rated to a certain durability, then it's unfair, next. But if it has a history of failures and that's what caused it to break, then I'd pursue it too.

And why would you presume the lock would prevent the attack from happening? This is a psychopath who has no issues barging into a home to try and stab a girl to death. That's my question.

I wonder if the lock was installed properly.

My husband once installed an ANSI grade 2 lock for his aunt. He didn't use the right screws on the strike plate. A drill is needed and he didn't have one on hand. It got kicked down by burglars easily (no one was home luckily).

If they followed the manufacturer's installation instructions then they have a case. Otherwise, probably not.

There is a pretty high chance it wasn't installed properly. People really suck at reading manuals and doing things correctly.

Is there anything on the lock that says, "This will survive one or multiple kicks."?

And I don't think anyone is siding against the woman. I'm sure we all feel bad for her situation, it's just that the rapist is solely responsible (unless she can prove that it wasn't installed properly by Home Depot).

I wonder if there is any detail on what actually was wrong. Was it one of those chain locks? Or was it a doorknob? Also did the lock itself fail or did the knob/lock get destroyed with the excess force? I don't blame her for taking the legal action if she was advised, but I've honestly never heard of a company being sued for a situation like this.

Blame the maker, not the seller. Cheap locks are not the best locks.

I agree with this, but the seller also was the installer, so I can see why they were thrown into the lawsuit.

It doesn't say that they installed it.
