http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/21/politics/kfile-sam-clovis-lgbt-comments/index.html

Sam Clovis, Donald Trump's pick to be chief scientist for the Department of Agriculture, has argued that homosexuality is a choice and that the sanctioning of same-sex marriage could lead to the legalization of pedophilia, a CNN KFile review of Clovis' writings, radio broadcasts, and speeches has found.

Clovis made the comments between 2012 and 2014 in his capacity as a talk radio host, political activist, and briefly as a candidate for US Senate in Iowa. His nomination has drawn criticism from Senate Democrats, who argue his lack of scientific background makes him unqualified for the USDA post overseeing science.

Clovis has repeatedly argued that the science on homosexuality is unsettled and that "LGBT behavior" is a choice. The American Psychological Association has said that while there is no scientific consensus on the causes of sexual orientation, "most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation."

Asked for comment on Clovis' beliefs surrounding the science of homosexuality, a USDA spokeswoman told CNN: "The Supreme Court settled the issue in 2015." The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

KFile has previously reported on controversial comments Clovis made during his time as a talk radio host about race and then-President Barack Obama. At that time, a USDA spokesperson said that Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue still supports Clovis to be the under secretary for research, education and economics.

Clovis, whose background and views are strongly rooted in the politics of conservative talk radio, made most of his remarks in the context of discussing his belief LGBT people should not be given protections under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. He says he believed that if LGBT people got such protections, pastors wouldn't be allowed to preach against the "aberration" that "alternative lifestyles" were to church doctrine.

Writing in an op-ed for the local conservative blog Iowa Republican in April 2011, Clovis argued science of being LGBT was unsettled and if being gay was genetic, then other people genetically-disposed like left-handed people should receive constitutional protections as well.
...
At a campaign stop during his failed campaign for the Republican Senate nomination in Iowa, Clovis said the science was still out but "as far as we know" being LGBT is choice. Clovis then concludes the protecting of LGBT people could mean that pedophilia would also be protected.

"Someone who engages in LGBT behavior -- I don't know what the science is on this, I think it's still out -- but as far as we know, LGBT behavior is a choice they make, Clovis says in a video obtained by CNN's KFile. "So we're being asked to provide Constitutional protections for behavior, a choice in behavior as opposed to a primary characteristic."

"There's no equivalency there between the civil rights issue associated between those protected classes and the civil rights of someone who engages in a particular behavior," continues Clovis. "Follow the logic, if you engage in a particular behavior, what also becomes protected? If we protect LGBT behavior, what other behaviors are we going to protect? Are we going to protect pedophilia? Are we going to protect polyamorous marriage relationships? Are we going to protect people who have fetishes? What's the logical extension of this? It can't be that we're going to protect LGBT and then we'll pull up the ladder. That's not going to happen, it defies logic. We're not thinking the consequences of these decisions through."

You dont follow because this is not what's being said or suggested at all.

I don't agree with the guy at all, but you dont have to mischaracterize an already stupid opinion.

Anyways, there is no reason "fetishes" or polygamy should be illegal anyway if those involved are consenting adults.

You're kidding yourself if you don't think the gay rights rhetoric (especially the "born that way" nonsesnse) has crept into the pedophile acceptance movement. We have several users here who defend it all the time as an alternative sexual preference. Even before the disgusting Salon articles, more moderate left-wing publications like The Atlantic had articles like this one painting pedophiles who've looked at child porn as sympathetic victims:

I have never really bought that - it's nothing more than right-wing scare tactics ("legalize this and pedophilia is next!"), usually to try and compare the two. It'll never be mainstream, no matter how hard regressive outlets like Salon or The Atlantic try to treat said people as victims. So once again the far-left and far-right are completely wrong on the issue.

exactly.

why can't republicans LEAVE THE GAYS ALONE! >:U They've fought tooth and nail for everything they have! If they want to hurt the gays they'll have to go through me first!

I think that kind of opinion is insulting to men in general. Should we start to not let them near little girls? They're heterosexual right? So are little girls at risk to heterosexual men like little boys are to gay men?

Gay, Bi, Trans, Ace etc. people want to feel good about how their lives and bodies work. A gay dude wants to love dudes without being called a bunch of slurs or have his behavior labeled as "disgusting" or "immoral", and a gay dude most likely wants to love him back to the same effect. A Trans person wants their body to display how they feel inside, and the backlash against MtF people boiling down to "we think trans women are predatory men who will use restrooms to molest and ogle women" shows that people see them as men pretending to be women for a sexual thrill. A lot of this backlash serves to make people unhappy with how their shit was wired, and it leads to them hating themselves and how they feel, when they're no more likely to be creepy, predatory people than the next asshole.

A gay person loving another gay person, given that they have mutual feelings for someone within their age range, or a trans person expressing a gender that they were not born as, harms no-one. It has to do with body image and feelings of happiness/satisfaction. The reason sexual indecency like a grown man or woman feeling romantic or sexual attraction towards a child isn't comparable is because we acknowledge children as having wildly different brain make-up than adults, that their existence as children makes them less prepared for adult experiences - to the point that pedophilia fucks with how their mind works and scars them. It also works via manipulation, using societal concepts and pubic hormone shit to manipulate someone into doing gross shit for an adult. It's ethically wrong for several major reasons, and there's more to add to that list if pedophilia is executed as physical force against an unwilling person.

A gay adult loving a gay adult doesn't have that stigma, because two gay adults are distinguished people who have grown into people and have an understanding of how other people work. You generally can't manipulate an adult with "i love you"s and inappropriate customs becoming the norm behind closed doors in a similar sense as how pedophiles prey on children, because gay adults have more sense and are aware of how worldly shit goes. Trans people being allowed to ID as another gender is a personal choice that affects the people around them, such as family members and the like, but it's rooted in self-image and self-actualization - its existence doesn't tread on anyone else's shit, unless you consider it an affront to God and His way (in which case you're kind of a sanctimonious asshole, butting your way into other people's business). On a different note - different fetishes and shit? Again, done with like-minded consenting adults who have more often than not been around the block enough times to behave appropriately to the world around them and to each other, to the detriment of very few.

The thing that separates LGBTQIA+ stuff from these heinous, shitty offences that anti-gay types like to throw around - like pedophilia and beastiality - is consent and manipulation. Gay people want to be together, and that harms no-one. A trans woman wants to be a woman, and it harms no-one. Other alignments and identities exist in a way that makes it hard for people to be happy compared to "the norm", and it links them to people who feel similarly to the mixed bag that is sexuality - it's how people intrinsically feel. Developed people, coming together to make each other happy, or individual people altering their physical forms to please themselves. Pedophilia and beastiality require a person to actively harm a living being who is not ready chemically or emotionally for what they are made to experience - LGBTQIA+ behavior is about people who are chemically or emotionally drawn together by how their minds are intrinsically wired, and who express happiness and togetherness in a way that isn't socially acceptable to some, but in a way they were born with, can't help feeling and doesn't harm those around them.

Yep. It's the only time the right pulls their punches, it seems. It's probably also why democrats are failing so spectacularly. Couldn't rally the base because so many felt disillusioned by their own party.

Not so for the right, it seems. They might not like the deplorables but they don't seem to go out of their way to distance themselves from them.

Agree with most of what you say except the whole LGBT(blah blah blah) labels.

Hell if I had my way the gay and trans community would be completely separate.

There are people in the community who feel the same way, to my knowledge. TERFs, or trans-exclusionary radical feminists, are one such group.

I'd like to see more self-aware coverage of the LGBTQIA+ crowd, personally. People do bad things and are shunned and ousted, and there are splinter factions who identify with the crowd even though internal groups condemn or refuse to affiliate with the actions of those factions, but the community is presented as an entirely inclusive group for all stated walks of life. Meanwhile, lesbian TERFs call asexual/demisexual people "hetero invaders" and want them out of the acronym (and replace the A with "ally", which other people detest), and stuck-up gay dudes are known to call transgender people slurs and mock them in the same way traditionally straight people have been known to do. There's a lot to say about the LGBTQIA+ community that goes outside of "Love Everyone" and "We're Fine".
