have you ever heard of a customer taking their broken car to a mechanics workshop, and then tell the mechanic how to do their job and that they aren't allowed to do X, Y, and Z required tasks to fix the car?
no?
then why does it happen in tech repair stores? people come in and say they want it fixed, then when the store provides solutions they say shit like "no, i've never had to do that before" when it was impossible that they couldnt have

I get this from friends and colleagues sometimes too. They'll ask for my help or advice, then when I try to do that I'll get told that I'm wrong.

I find it infuriating. They asked for my help because they didn't know what they were doing, and know that I do.

Because Mr. T isn't there to slap them in the face if they act disrespectful over the phone.

I realized this back when I did tech support. It was part of the reason I wanted to become a network engineer. Now, I don't deal with customers. I just keep the company running on my network.

The only people I deal with are employees of the company, and they're always cool with me.

i dunno what i wanna specialize in yet. i was top of the class for web dev in uni but i have a feeling im not a great programmer

networking seems cool but theres like a billion commands you gotta learn plus if the network is done thats gotta be the most stressful ever

database admin/report writing etc is also fun but ive seem some complete shit garbage trash databases that want to make me want to cry just looking at them

i never want to be a manager, hate office politics. not even a supervisor since i dont want to be responsible for other peoples work

sysadmin feels like a good fit for me but i'll keep doing my CCNA stuff for the time being cause im enjoying it

What makes you feel that way? I'm curious because if you're top of the class, means that you're doing something right.

In South Africa, development pays a lot more than sysadmin roles, not sure if it's the same where you are.

On topic: I think it's generally because they don't want to lose their data. Their documents and photos and stupid toolbars in their browsers. As for why it's different with a mechanic, these people have more knowledge of how their PC works than how their car does, so they believe they know more than they really do. Belief is a strong thing.

i dont think of myself as a "math" guy

I think I'm alright strictly when it comes to applied math, but when I start trying to do stuff like Big O or solving weird "job interview questions" that (i think) aren't really day to day stuff, my mind just melts and I got no clue, so for that reason I don't think I'd ever make it in a real programming job.

Maybe as a freelance web developer or the only developer for a company so nobody can inspect my code

example of weird questions I'd struggle with: http://www.mindcipher.com/puzzles/28
my mindset reading something like that in a job interview would be like "how is this job relevant, I just want to code websites"

It seems like development (which I basically interpret as being jobs where you are doing more actual programming and less using monitoring tools and stuff like that) is where the real money and opportunities are at. I'm by no means an expert though, and I've never worked in a sys or network admin type role.

To be honest, I don't know how much maths I actually use on a day to day basis as a software developer. Maybe other products would require it, but I haven't needed much more than basic maths and logic in the last 10 years I've been a dev.

Although I was mainly a web developer for quite some time.

But still, if you don't enjoy dev, definitely don't do it. I'm a firm believer in doing the job that you love, not just to get paid but also because it's fun.
