There are a lot of young men who need help, particularly with the opposite sex. Yet there is no actual mechanism or support system in place in society to help them right now. When someone seeks "help", they are almost always routed in the direction of mental health treatment. This isn't always what people need, especially when it's a type of thing where a "doctor" is trying to find some diagnosis to blame so he can write a prescription.

People like this kid need some actual real life coaching, like what Clint Eastwood gives that kid in Gran Torino, something that seems to not exist in this world anymore.

Ugg hate that I am agreeing with REMercsChamp, but I hate people like this even more. They will be completely useless in life.

I was teased a shit ton in elementary school and I just let people do it. When I hit middle school something flipped in my mind and I stopped taking shit from people. From that point on school no longer sucked and I stuck up for myself when people tried shit. By high school I wasn't bullied by anyone anymore and had friends from ALL the various cliques.

I think the reason I get so pissed at people like this is because I WAS that person in elementary and I changed that about myself. My life is awesome now because of it. It's the same reason I fat shame hugely obese people, they need to change themselves not expect people to change for them.

I was a complete loser until I was like 13. Wouldn't talk to girls, except my one friend, and she was in senior year while I was in grade 8.

Eventually when I turned 14 I had a crush on a popular girl. Asked her out knowing she would say no. Despite this, a bunch of guys who made fun of me in grade 8 gained respect for me just for "having the balls" to ask in the first place and I was never bothered again, and eventually became a pseudo popular kid/nerd hybrid. You know the ones...

It's like Dustin said. You have to change yourself.

You're obviously looking at bullying as hysterically black and white if you think standing up to them has a 100% success rate. It's a good thing to do, but people typically have a very good reason to be intimidated and end up not doing it. Especially if you're getting bullied by a number of people.

That's generally the key when reading stories like these is understanding that not everyone has the same circumstances. This applies to every aspect of life. Just because you or your friend or family member overcame it with ease doesn't mean someone on the other side of the country or planet will.

It IS black and white, if you don't change yourself and continue to let people walk on you forever, nothing good will come of your life. You are basically wasting it by being a doormat.

If he stood up for himself even a little bit, even if he continued to be bullied, his life would have been better. Sure it probably wouldn't have solved all of his issues, but at the very least he wouldn't have turned into the miserable person he is today.

Believe me, I can relate and that is why it pisses me off to see people like this. Because I have been there myself. It got better because I started sticking up for myself. Eventually once I hit high school I was respected by my peers, not laughed at.

I never changed school districts either, my elementary school peers were my same peers in high school.

You are your own worst enemy in this situation. Don't expect people to change, change yourself.

If you are bullied and do NOTHING about it and instead allow the bully to walk all over you w/o sticking up for yourself, then the bullying will only get worse.

On the other hand if you stick up for yourself (even if it means getting punched in the face, on multiple occasions.) It will eventually get better.

Bullies pray on easy targets, if you never stick up for yourself then you are an easy target.

Stop making yourself an easy target by bending over for the bullies.

I agree, strong people SHOULD stick up for weak people, by high school I was sticking up for people that were still getting bullied because some of them were my friends from elementary.

Weak people shouldn't sit there and expect said strong people to do it though, they should attempt to stick up for themselves.

If you just let people walk all over you, don't expect some hero to come galloping in to save you. You can only count on yourself, not others.

I was kinda in the same boat, except I got a wicked hot chick from another school and brought her to some of my school dances.

Girls who had previously made jokes behind my back were asking for my number and all the douchebags tried to get her number. When she rejected them they came to except me

i mean i get it.

you want the victim to not be a victim but it's not and never will be their responsibility in the same way that it's not the rape victim's responsibility to not be raped, the home owner's responsibility to not be robbed etc.

to argue that someone is expected to protect or stand up for themselves against rapists/robbers/bullies is not even a bad opinion, it's just a wrong one.

Go read up on learned helplessness. Once you have it, game over unless someone, like a psych, breaks you out of it. A lot of people are mentally weak and can't break the cycle, people whose anxiety and depression are so damn fucking powerful that they are literally stuck. It snowballs and you can't defend yourself, you're isolated and can't gain experience while others do.

Actually plan to look into this in more detail, but upon a preliminary look I can understand while once someone has gotten to that point, they are unable to get out of it.

That is why parents need to instill confidence in their children to stick up for themselves regardless of the fact that you may get punched in the face doing so. Hopefully to prevent someone from even getting to the point of "learned helplessness."

Not necessarily respected, no i imagine i got lucky in that regard. But definitely be in a better position then if you did nothing.

There are of course exceptions, like if someone pulls a weapon on you then sticking up for yourself would be a bad plan.
