I love that.

And yeah, I don't like kids either. Harpie, do people ever tell you that you'll change your mind as you get older? ugh!

All the time. God forbid I bring up the fact that I'm going to get a tubal litigation in three years lol

Have you already started talking to your doctor about this? It's quite difficult for a woman under the age of 35 and without at least two children to obtain any form of permanent sterilization. A long paper trail helps make your case to the doctors you'll see.

Nah not yet. I'll start talking about it and doctor shopping when I'm 19 or 20. Until then, I need to organize a strong argument in my favor

You literally stopped being a child a week ago.

A child is someone who hasn't reached puberty yet

I literally have an 8 year old in the family that's already started her period. I don't think anyone would say an 8 year old isn't a child.

This came up organically during conversation?

Yeah it's generally pretty conversation worthy when you had to come get your 8 year old daughter on the first day of school because she just started her period and doesn't even know what that is. My aunt told my mom, then she told me since I talk to her on the phone for 10 mins or so every morning and she always talks about stuff in the family.

Ironically, the common counter argument when one seeks sterilization is that "you're too young/immature to make this decision."

Nevermind that if a 16 year old decides to have a kid, no doctor will tell her that she's too immature to make that decision.

It's difficult even for men.

No. I don't have the money to see multiple doctors just to be told no.

I know that sounds like quitting before I even begin, but it's based on talking with hundreds of other people seeking the same thing and getting turned down. My copay is like $40 just to see a doctor. That's not even getting into the procedure being covered.

Good news for you though: several forms of female sterilization are often covered by insurance. I think bilateral salpingectomies are one of the most popular.

kids are so cute

I don't understand why anyone would make a permanent life changing decision like sterilization even if they are 100% at the time you don't want children. You don't know shit about your future self

I don't understand why anyone WOULDN'T. Getting sterilized doesn't prevent you from having kids, it prevents you from accidentally doing so. If you choose to have a kid in the future you can always adopt, don't have to risk having one at an inconvenient time

I love children, but I couldn't eat a whole one. ;)

Seriously though kids are great, its the reason we exist and our primary goal as a species, to procreate. I'm not a dad but I have 2 nephews and 2 nieces and they're all grown up now but I miss the time when they were young. I was always the cool uncle (at least in my mind, lol) that played video games with them and chatted about movies and comics and fun stuff. Being around them just made me a big goofy kid and I miss that.

I haven't read through the topic but you're relatively young right Harpie? And you're the one who's mentioned wanting to get your tubes tied right? If so I really wouldn't suggest that at such a young age because for starters don't doctors generally try to avoid doing that, especially when you're younger, when there's no medical necessity to? I think there's a lot of issues that can come along with getting your tubes tied. It would probably be better to just stick with bc as much more inconvenient as that is and when/if you end up in a serious long term relationship it would be much safer and better for you physically to have them get a vasectomy.
And secondly, and I'm not saying this will happen just that there's a chance of it, which is that you'll feel differently about kids at some point 10+ years in the future and you might decide you do, because after all it is a natural biological desire we're all programmed to want, but of course that doesn't mean everyone actually ends up wanting kids, I'm just saying there's chance your feelings could change. It just seems like an all around bad idea to do that so young, I know women that had to have theirs done young for medical reasons and child related stuff aside they generally speak pretty negatively of it and talk largely negatives about it and wish they hadn't had to have it done.
I don't know if you're still considering doing that but if so I'd really reconsider it and make sure you talk with your doctor/doctors a lot just to make sure you know exactly what you're in for with it.

People have told Harp multiple times that she's in La La land when it comes to this. She's 18. Unless she forks out a massive lump sum to a third party doctor, no one will do it.

Same thing happened to my buddy, tried for years to get a vasectomy between 17-20. Eventually all the docs told him to go away.

She's been told multiple times but still thinks she's gonna get her way. It's honestly disheartening.

I'm 18, and I want permanent birth control because the pill makes me break out and get horrible cramps, I'm allergic to nickle so I can't get the arm implant, and generally I don't really want an IUD in my body.

What sets us apart from other animals is the ability to function and think beyond our "biological desires"
Reasons such as
1) I can't stand being around children, often times it literally triggers a panic attack if I feel trapped with them
2) Autism is extremely heritable in my family, with 3/4 boys in my generation having a severe, low functioning version of it
3) Long family history of abuse, I could end up repeating the cycle
4) There are so much more competent and willing women who are able to take care of children. Leave the child bearing to them
5) I have a phobia of things being stuck in me, such as pregnancy
6) Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, cancer death at fifty and schiztophrenia are also prevalent in both sides of my family. Do I really wanna pass that on?
7) etc..

Were the women you spoke with childless before getting the procedure? Women who have kids before getting it done have a much higher regret rate than those who didn't have kids. According to statistics, 20% of women under 30 with children regretted the procedure, and 6% of childless women under 30 regretted the procedure.
