I've never heard of MMORPG PVP needing a tank, because human players aren't affected by aggro AI. Overwatch and their team shielding mechanics are the closest thing I can think of to tanking in PVP, and Overwatch isn't an MMOPRG.

You have armored fighters who do sustained dps through damage, you have squishy specialized dps, you have support, and you have healers. I know of no exception to this breakdown.

EDIT: Also, the gear requirements of good PVE dps can be savage, but if they're up there a team of dps can end a challenge in seconds before an encounter even has a chance to resolve a fatal attack. You just all bring interrupts and movement debuffs, and your most turgid e-peen. Assuming there's no other mechanics to worry about you can often end the whole mess in ten seconds with no one dead. Of course this is content you're already grossly overleveled for, or mechanics in need of rebalancing.

Though I've never played an MMO, the way I've seen people describe the raids in them and what they demand of players, makes it sound oddly similar to the hard levels in tower defense games I played, except you have to fill in the rolls of all the tanks, healers and DPSes at once.

No wonder those feel so stressful. >_>

Nah, usually everyone has a job or two, and you just do that job. The healer may have to worry about keeping up dps, but typically only has to worry about the tank so long as DPS stay in the their lanes. The tank maintains aggro, and brings a bit of support as the situation demands, and the dps just keep attacking and avoid dying to encounter mechanics. If everyone does their role to satisfaction, things will work out fine.

Well yeah, but I'm saying those tower defense levels are basically that too, except you are every DPS, healer and tank yourself, at once, since it's not multiplayer. Like if you had to control every instance of that role yourself.

Yeah. I never had so much fun than right at WotLK release. My guild gave me VIP status on raids. Didn't have to show up every time, I'd replace someone if they were full any time I was available. Had first dibs on best loot.

I remember I read a forum post on Blizzard's official forum. It was when everyone thought frost was a tank build and someone suggested a build to go dual wield and do insane AOE damage + self sustain. Everyone was like, "that'll never work. You're dumb."

Well I tried his build and it was absolutely broken xD

I think they patched it after it caught on.

Frost was a tank build. In WotLK, every death knight spec was both a DPS and tank spec depending on the talents and gear you took.
