Otherwise, running through magical lands full of turtles and mushrooms while shooting fire from your hand and doing crazy somersaults isn't really an italian stereotype

I'd say that, apart from references to the mob and maybe making fun of their speech patterns when speaking English, most Italian stereotypes ('they make great food, talk with their hands and don't bottle up their emotions') are positive or at least benign rather than negative.

People have been poking fun at Mario being a stereotype for years, but nothing's ever come out of it because I have to assume no one's seriously offended by it.

My favourite is when Cartoon Network banned Speedy Gonzales for being racist, only for the Latino community to demand him back. Yet CN still puts a warning label on old Merrie Melodies shorts like a bunch of pussies.

I mean don't you have to say something bad about the group in question to be racist?

Giving a character a mustache and an accent doesn't really qualify. I guess if none of the other characters (or the audience) could understand what he was saying, that might be a problem.

Ive never seen this ever, so why are we calling this a stereotype to begin with. Even when I thought about Italians, an image of Mario never popped up in my head.

Why is he called a stereotype? Is it simply because they labelled a character italian?

Did people really think of a mustache, plumber who says "mama mia" when they thought of Italians is basically my question.

* The allegedly offensive character has strong sides — for example, Speedy may be somewhat stereotypical, but note that he is shrewd, energetic, determined, and always wins.

* The other characters aren't portrayed as any better — for example, Axis Powers Hetalia has an All Stereotype Cast.

* The stereotype is carried so far as to be clear parody even to a casual viewer — for example, The Mikado and Borat.

* The stereotype is so unintentionally ridiculous that members of the stereotyped demographic can't help but think, "It's hilarious that this is what they think about us" — for example, Tintin in the Congo and Reefer Madness.

* The stereotypical aspects are exceedingly Fair for Its Day — for example, Charlie Chan.

* The demographic rarely even appears in the media, so they embrace any representation they receive — for example, the title character in Borat (again) and Khan in Star Trek.

This could be a factor as to why it isn't considered a great offense to Italian-Americans. Mario is unequivocally good, determined and heroic. The accent is face-level, and mostly consists of grunts, cries and whoops - outside of that, you have a handful of soundbites per game. If Mario spent a whole game speaking with a broken English accent and talking about his love for spaghetti, meatballs, ravioli and different foods to constantly play up "hey guys, i'm italian, look how italian I'm being", that might be a problem - but his heroic qualities mixed with the relatively low frequency of stereotyping doesn't make Mario such a big deal.
