32 years old, and I'm moving back in with my parents. All because this government job is taking literally MONTHS to give me a start date even after being hired.

This.

Tell me, did you move into an apartment before any guarantee of a tangible income?

I had a decent income when I moved in. But I was fired, and I've been working in a deli for over a year. It was fine for a little while, and this job was supposed to hire after my first interview nearly three months ago. Then the contract I was supposed to go on pulled out, then I went in for another interview, told me I was hired, then I filled out a 15 page background check that they said would take a week...it took a month. I figured I'd be working by now. And I'm pretty broke now.

Yeah. And I can't get my parents to help because they are doing bad financially as well (my mom's been sick for 7 or 8 months, and can't find a doctor, and can only work a few days a week). They also had to put the dog to sleep a couple of days ago, and had to borrow the money from me.

You will probably still get that job. Hiring with most state jobs just take forever if you aren't like a high up type position. You should call the hiring person and tell them what is going on. They will call HR and try to speed it up.

If you do get the job soon you shouldn't move out voluntarily. Depending on where you live it usually takes a real long time for them to actually evict you. They can file papers and give you stuff that says they are going to evict you but they usually need a court order to physically remove you which takes a long time. You should stay until you get the job and then try to work it out with the LL.

Coincidentally, my parents actually work there, and my dad is upper-middle management. The fact that they worked there was why I was apprehensive in the first place. Just seemed weird to work the same place they do. And ironically, the reason I was desperate for the job in the first place - to avoid moving back home - is happening because of the wait.

problem with that, if he doesn't move out before they send him to court. it messes with his credit rating for 7 years. he's going to have a harder time getting a place when things get better.

Shit, my bad. Sorry for the snark, that's a legitimately shitty situation you got caught up in.

I'm sure you'll get that job soon. Like people said, civil service/gov't jobs are filled with red-tape bullshit in the hiring process. Look on the bright side. Making a good salary while living at home = SAVE SO MUCH MONEY.

Hell, even staying at the deli job until then while I live back home would bring in the money.

Apparently I was supposed to get an email this week about a start date. They haven't sent one in a couple of weeks. And apparently they take this long with everyone.

I don't think I even want this job. It's been three fucking months.

And what's the plan if this job falls through?

Stay at Kroger, and find something else.
