It's entirely possible to like FF9 on the strength of its gameplay. Speaking personally, I've never played FF3DS, but speed just isn't incredibly important to me in an RPG battle systems, beyond a certain point. A particularly snappy system can improve a game, sure. Meanwhile, mastering abilities off of equipment is like a dopamine IV straight to my brain. I like what trance does for each of the characters (feels more individualized than (mostly) variations on damage attacks like limits in 7/8), even though building/not being able to hold the meter is hot garbage. I think each character has a pretty cool diversity of options at their disposal (eg, as a thief Zidane isn't stuck to only having steal and flee) and can fill multiple niches.

I didn't even SEE the pic in question so I have no ill will or even a comment on that, but I will say this (and this will be ALL I say on this matter): Nobody likes to be kicked when they're already down.

I think every one of us here can take a joke in the best of times. We all have the ability to laugh at ourselves, however you are absolutely lying to yourself if you think you can handle a joke at your expense when you're already in a foul mood.

Like if I were to have lost a character I pushed hard for I wouldn't want a litany of posts making fun of me or that character until I had enough time to get over it. To me that's like ribbing somebody after their dog died of cancer. scarlet claims he knows charon, but if that were true he should've known better than to post an image essentially poking fun at him (and me apparently). I guess he just couldn't resist such a rare opportunity?

At any rate this is why I am more likely to offer condolences than mockery when someone loses something they care about in any contest (even if inside I think it's hilarious because I hate that character). Does that make me better than many of you? No. Because I'm better than all of you haha kiss my ass. Peace out, bitches. *mic drop*

I mean, I guess if there's something way different about the abilities being learned from equipment to you vs the many other ways in the series that are similar but aren't specifically from equipment, I'm not going to get in your way.

The board at large hates on Tactics Advance's gameplay too though. Granted a lot of that is due to other things like the dumb law system but you'd think if there were dopamine IVs running rampant in that game people might highlight the positives to that game's system once in a while. Not saying there aren't things FFIX's combat does well-- I'm just pointing out how uneven the representations of the positives and negatives of battle systems tend to be around here. Almost like some people on the board just look for reasons to try and explain why a game they don't like is objectively bad instead of just saying what they personally didn't like about it.

Now all this to say that with a series like FF that isn't heavily gameplay driven, so most people on the board probably aren't playing it for its gameplay so yeah given the track record and that I'll take all gameplay appraisals with a bit of skepticism coming in. FF2's included, cause really it's easy to point out how dumb it is in theory but in practice you probably aren't going to hit most of the weird snags with it unless you want every character to do everything or have no sense of pattern recognition.

edit: but yes i do prefer the equipment system to 6's magicite, or 5's class based -- mostly because there are just more of them. it's a constant stream of changing and optimizing the equipment to get all the abilities versus the relatively limited subset of magic/classes you'll need.

Yeah to be honest, I just played FF2 normally without worrying too much about the exact patterns of stat growth and it worked out fine.

Its a bit harder to god mode your characters in, but I consider the ease with which you do so in FF6 to be a bug not a feature.

I dont think any of the 2D FFs have good gameplay honestly. Good narrative sure, but good gameplay lol no except for FFIVDS.

FFXIII I dont really enjoy the narrative that much but by the end game it is SO fun.

Plenty of FF games have good gameplay. FFV, FFX, FFIV DS are all excellent even without the story I feel. I really liked FFXIII's gameplay too though I can see why people might not-- then again I didn't dislike FFII's gameplay as much as most.

I kinda stopped taking the gameplay criticism seriously from most of this board when their favorite FF was the utterly glacial FFIX though.

I'm not saying that they don't! It's just a series that isnt quite known for its gameplay

When I think of FFX for example, it's not the Sphere Grid and the turn based gameplay.

I've never liked Datto because his endurance is crap and you don't even need him to score once you learn the Jecht Shot, so I drop him for Wedge as soon as I can. And I barely think of Wakka as an Auroch because you can't even recruit him again until late in the game. I guess technically Tidus is the best Auroch, but yeah.

Also, FFX and FFXIII are probably the only games in the series where the gameplay is actually a major factor in how much I like it.

Jassu is the only Auroch I always keep on my team. I turn him into my midfielder.

although in my FFX HD playthrough I actually chose to keep the entire Aurochs team together for fun and a decent challenge

Gameplay means more than just battle systems and customization suites. It's the minigames, the moment-to-moment exploration, the relative interest (or disinterest) in what lies beyond that next beaten path.

Final Fantasy frequently excels at some of this.
