If you want to retire in style, max it. I have been maxing at ~$18K/yr since I was 23. 18k a year is like 9k less than my entire salary. I get these numbers are a joke to you, but you need to consider my economic placement. --- 3DS FC: 4312 - 9992 - 0441 ... Copied to Clipboard!

A 401k is an investment account. I started about 3 years ago, also putting $50 in each check. 26 checks a year. So that's 78 checks bringing me to $3900. My company matches that contribution, bringing it up to $7800. Since that's all invested, I don't just have $7800 in my account. Last I checked it was about $10500. It goes up and down with the stock market. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

What's the point of going above match? Why not invest that some other way? You contribute pre-tax, so you reduce your tax burden at the present but pay taxes when you withdraw. The idea is that you're likely to have lower income when you retire so you save on taxes overall. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
