I played it for maybe about 10 minutes when it came out 3 years ago and remember liking it, but it was so brief and I died a lot. People were raving about this game, and it seems like it was really good. All of this recent Shadow of War hype/controversy has me wondering if I should buy SoM or just not even bother.

If the answer to both those things is, "I guess so" then wait for Shadow of War.

It's pretty cool. The gameplay has touches of Arkham and Assassin's Creed, and I loved how much personality they were able to give to individual enemies. Having the same guy keep showing up to fuck up your day was cool.

It was funny but started feeling the same about halfway through. Like all the missions were just the same thing.

Arkham gameplay through and through, in the LOTR universe, an alright story, and an abysmal disappointment of an ending.

Along with an incredibly interesting mechanic which gives actual personality to enemies. Depending on practically every variable you can think of, they'll change their mannerisms, weaknesses and strengths, become stronger or weaker, etc. The nemesis system is the star of the show here, and I'd recommend checking it out specifically to see it in action. It's pretty cool actually.

If that sounds good to you, go for it.

It's an orc (or uruk?) killing simulator with Arkham combat, but I put a surprising amount of hours into it. The Nemesis system is neat, I hope they expand on it in the sequel.

Extremely overrated. It isn't bad. It's even fun in small doses. But there isn't any variety and the story is boring.
