First amendment doesn't apply all the time. It doesn't protect obscenity, fighting words, defamation, perjury, blackmail, solicitations to crime, threats, or incitement to imminent lawless action. Hate speech can fall under those things.
SCOTUS has confirmed that hate speech is protected. If the hate speech checks off those other boxes it may not be. Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence and people are completely free to call out racists, sexists, ageists, ableists, etc. --- Never write off the Doctor! ... Copied to Clipboard!

There's also a case where the Supreme Court ruled that films did not qualify as protected speech, because they were business, not art: Mutual Film Corporation v.
