He's one of the original creators of the series and also the series lead writers when he worked at valve. The story he posted is what his vision for the 3rd game was going to be.

It probably was a cliffhanger for Half-life 3. But it could've just been a full on bad end, we may never know.

It's an obvious (intended) set up for a full third game, with the outline presented as a letter from Gordon. The letter ends with Gordon saying basically "none of that matters now since it's been so long, my influence has long since waned, maybe it made a difference, maybe it didn't.", which also reads as a meta reference to the series as a whole and its legacy/influence and how it may have been tarnished by development fuckery.

valve has so much money that they'll scrap a nearly complete game if they feel it isn't "right". that's why they've never announced their titles until they're more or less done, and happy with the product. I recall a mention that they're waiting for VR to improve and become "the standard" (no motion sickness, better headtracking, cheap enough that almost every gamer has a headset in their home) before they go balls deep on HL3. they have f***ed themselves over by waiting over a decade though, it'll take a miracle for the game to deliver on the hype that has been set.

i don't disagree. but valve obviously doesn't think so. they've already announced that they're developing (yes) three full games with full VR support. Plus they've thrown a lot at VR technology with HTC. And today, they've partnered with Microsoft, adding support to their VR headsets too. Half Life 3 is their trump card that they're going to use to use as advertisement to really push the technology imo. it's awesome if done right and implemented properly, most VR games that exist now are made by shitty indie devs.

Even if it did, all of the people that worked on the previous entries have left Valve. Do we really still want it?
