It's weird. I obviously don't wish harm on anyone but when I read about a dog being left behind, I want to cry. However when I hear about humans dying, I don't really feel anything.

Animals have the cognitive capacity of a baby/toddler. You feel bad because as inherently innocent creatures, harm done to them feels especially corrupt, whereas harm against adults is weighted partially against the unspoken sins of the victim.

A dog is always innocent, a human is not and because it that you may feel they may have either had it coming or they were worthless to society anyway.
