If you know English then they let you teach English. That's literally how most teaching works.

In many cases, you're the pronunciation expert and not really the main teacher.

But yeah, sometimes countries are just that desperate for foreigner English teachers.

South Korea is the same way I believe.

The kids usually know some english, and there is another teacher in there with you who definitely knows both languages. It isn't like you just get thrown in there and you have to communicate with pictures.

Yeah, I knew a girl who went to South Korea to teach.

Typically what happens is you either teach older kids who know some english, until you learn the other language well enough to be one that knows both languages.

Sometimes if you're in really high demand, someone who speaks the language and English poorly will do a rough translation and then differ to you

You either are working simultaneously with another person fluent in both, or you only teach people who are past the conversational hurdle and can understand english enough to learn from a pure english speaker.

I've known a couple of people who have moved to other countries to teach English and they don't seem to know that country's language. Seemed weird to me but it's clearly not unusual. I guess the explanations above are how it works our because I was also confused about it.

Because foreign english teachers in Japan aren't exactly teaching english, they're just hired to play games with the kids. It's the japanese teachers who actually teach.

My husband and I teach in Korea.

Legally the native English teacher (NET) is required to have a teacher with them at all times for instructions. Sometimes they will just slip out and let the NET teach by themselves. We teach in a really rural area where English is pretty low but normally there is a least one kid per class that can help translate. That is from kindergarten to high school.

China, Korea, and Japan have their own English teachers who focus on grammer and the NETs are more facilitators for speaking and pronunciation. It's like if a foreigner went to America to help with a Spanish or French class.

The requirements, at least where I am from, are no criminal backgrounds and at least two years of college.

A lot of people come here just to travel and see the culture. Others come to actually teach. So it's a mixed bag.

Some people choose Euros. Some choose US dollars. Some choose doll hairs. It's up to the individual.

My brother got a job in South Korea for being an English teacher and he doesn't know a single thing about the Korean language. He said that he's mostly just there to teach the high level English classes, so he doesn't say a single thing in Korean. English teachers are high in demand in some Eastern Asian countries.

To be an actual English teacher in Japan, you absolutely need to have a firm grasp of the language in order to even have a shot at being successful. But most English teaching jobs in Japan are more in line with assistant work than they are actual teacher work, so the need for competence in the native tongue is less.

It is the same in Korea. We have a high turnover rate because "teachers" come and have no experience teaching and never attempt to grasp the language. They last a year before leaving. Most just do movies or bomb games.

A lot of the ones that come here for traveling or "easy work" just show movies or play bomb games with students.

Bomb games are like Powerpoint memory games I think? I've never used them before.

And by "just do movies", I didn't mean porn. >_>

Ahh no. The video game industry isn't very big here. I don't know a single Korean video game to be honest.

There are a few non-ethnic Koreans who are in the entertainment industry but they are pretty rare. Amber from f(x) is really famous and there is this Australian comedian who is really popular. But they are practically native speakers.

Are they? I am so ignorant. My kids are all on Dota, Overwatch and LoL. They mobile games I see them play/ask about they say are Japanese.

I'm not a good source of game devs at all though. I'm so out of the gaming circle it isn't even funny.
