Do you think what best buy did was "fair"?

A Best Buy in Texas is facing harsh criticism after a journalist took a picture of them selling bottled water for $42, nearly TRIPLE the normal price!!

The electronic store was selling the bottled waters at an excessive price gouging as twitter users were outraged.

A 24 pack Dassani water at 500ml is priced jut above $15.50 and another sign showed a case of Smarwater selling at $29 with a sign noting there was "limited supply"

Twitter users have blasted the company that normally doesn't sell water and is taking advantage of residents hit by Hurricane Harvey who are struggling to endure the effects of the natural disaster

A BB representative said the pricing was a "big mistake" and that an employeee erroneously priced the entire case of water by multiplying the price of a single bottle. They said "As a company we are focused on helping, not hurting affected people"

Klippenstein, who took the photo said this isn't the first time that the store was accused of price gouging as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said they received hundreds of complaints about their price gouging. He said he promised to crack down on false pricing during the crisis and warns businesses would be slapped a $20,000 fine if they do.

Do you think it's "fair" what Best Buy did?

No, not fair at all and obviously against the law considering the threat of a fine. Pretty disgusting behavior, and I can only hope the person who authorized such a raise in price is also punished.

It's against the law to price gouge in times of natural disaster, actually.

That being said Best Buy will bullshit their way out of it by saying it was a bunch of separate units (each like $1.45) sold together rather than a bulk item.

I read about this somewhere...apparently what they're selling are packs they get from vendors to sell individually in their coolers by the register..they don't sell packs of water so they don't get sent packs of water that can be sold as one unit...the price they mark it as is the price their vendor expects to get if each bottle were sold individually...Rather than force people to buy each bottle one by one they are willing to part with the full set, but at the full cost of what each individual bottle would cost (essentially how it would have been sold in their store)....

*shrug*...you could say "if they claim that its bull shit"...but best buy doesn't sell 24 packs of water...they only sell individual bottles...which they likely get straight from the vendor. I don't think a local store manager has the authority to just sell a pack they have for that much less....now if they were selling individual bottles at that price i get it...its hard to tell with the way TC types and I don't feel like reading the links he posted.

You guys are talking about it like Best Buy corporate made the decision to price gouge. It's obviously a few employees doing sketchy shit.
It's not like bottled water is something best buy normally stocks.

Let's say they kept the prices low and some asshole shows up and buys all the water.

Yep, and Best Buy probably wouldn't be my first place to go to find water. One ends up not being able to get to the grocery store in time, and all water is sold out. Then they go to a gas station, which would have also been a higher price, and their water is sold out too?

Where else do you turn to? Best Buy.

They CAN limit how much a person can buy per visit, you know. Heck, apple does it for every major release and so you'll see people every day for a week or two buying the max amount to resell to people in China at a profit.

Apple Stores don't sell their iPhones in the middle of the worst natural disaster in US history, and Best Buy doesn't have the sort of system to be able to limit product in as controlled a fashion.

That's different and routine protocol from the top down. Suddenly expecting grocery store chains to require limits never works quite as planned.

You'll have some SJW cashier or manager deviating from the rules depending on who is buying the water and who is with them. "Oh that's fine, you have more people with you.. take all you need"

Or someone demanding to make separate transactions to buy cases of water, and employees afraid to call them out on it in fear of being prejudice.
