Don't feel like watching, but is this the issue where a company is actually providing an avenue for modders to get paid for their work rather than hoping that people donate money to them when they never actually do and then gamers are upset for no good reason at all?

Hardly, Jim Sterling has been a well known gaming pundit for years before his Zelda. Parts of his whole feud with Digital Homicide mad the headlines of big name gaming sites multiple times

Let's not pretend Bethesda are anything other than opportunistic vultures in this situation as they are taking the lions share of any mod made for them. Also they have been accused of just copying shit from Nexus and trying to sell it to idiots

So? Them taking the lion's share still leaves the modders with more money than hoping for donations. And if memory serves they're actually on commission to be paid during the development process, so it's not like they're reliant on a smash success for it to be worthwhile to them. And I think they had guidelines in place that previously made mods can't be taken down and then resubmitted to this, it has to be new content.

Not seeing the big deal, aside from crying over wanting stuff for free.

I personally find him insufferable, so no thanks. But I've previously listened to a couple TotalBiscuit videos on the subject and at least from that take it sounds like hyperventilation about mostly nothing, and that's coming from one of the most PC master race dudes you can imagine that preaches about consumer rights whenever possible.

I'd say asking for donations would probably net you more than letting Bethesda drop a few pennies on your lap for doing work that deserves alot more

Doesn't matter, Bethesda are doing fuck all themselves and don't deserve the lions share of a mods being sold and they're probably getting paid pennies for the work they put in

They aren't taking old shit and putting it on the creation club, they're looking at certain shit on Nexus and basically copying and pasting it on their service

The Creation Club is good in theory. A lot of things are good in theory, but game companies always find a way to cynically ooze every copper out of it. This looks to be no different. With how much of a colossal failure paid mods were in 2015, I'm not seeing much of a reason to give Bethesda the benefit of the doubt. If they offered some official substantial stuff - new settlements, maps, etc. - then it might be worth it. So far, all they've done is re-skinned the Pipboy and copied some armour mods from the Nexus, while doing a mathematically obtuse system for buying things. Nope, I'm not buying paid mods, Bethesda. Sorry. Go fuck yourselves.

Oh, one more thing. Remember when Bethesda launched the Gun Runner's Arsenal for New Vegas? It added a host of weapons, ammo, and mods to the game. The cost? $4. What are they charging for the Hellfire Power Armour? Essentially $5. You're paying more for less content.

So, your response is hyperbole and to call someone who disagrees with you a corporate thrall? Smooth.

And nope, essentially only pornographic mods make money off donations, the vast majority of other mods get a pittance from donation support.

Those are more valid criticisms, but it's also early in the process and whether or not its worthwhile will depend on time. That being said, as you said, it is good in theory and as a result the idea of outright dismissing the entire process based off a few examples seems to be jumping the gun.

Guys, it's no big deal that you have to pay for the mods because now Bethesda is personally testing each one to make sure it just works.

People really need to stop acting like this fucking matters, I see this same stupid shit said about Rockstar and Take Two.

The business practice is shit regardless who gave the order, stop supporting it.

I feel like the only way this could possibly work is by giving away all of the power to the modders. Let them decide the price (or free) and how much the game developer gets fom any sale (minimum $1 or something). Be as transparent as possible.

But even that isn't a guarantee of success. There's so much stuff out there competing for our money I think it's going to be difficult for paid mods to ever find success.

Sadly, I don't think the amount of crying/outrage about this will do anything. All it takes is casuals and whales to splurge up all this shit and it'll become common(it almost always happens). Just look at F2P mobile games.

At least those games get by with the caveat that they're free to play with micro-transactions. They produce a free product and subside on the people who buy micro-transactions. Having micro-transactions and loot boxes in full retail price games is just gross.
