Up until now, he refused to even admit that anything was wrong. He constantly claimed that he was just gaming the system, that he was just awesome and they were trying to hold him down because they were jealous and stupid shit like that. A person with that mindset does not deserve to be supported.

Now he's admitted he has a problem. I reserve judgement until he has a chance to actually make some changes, but I can admit that he's finally taken at least one step in the right direction and that is something to be proud of. The first step is usually the hardest.

The first time he came here and talked about the issues he was having, he got support. Then he did it again and blamed everyone else. And again. And again. If he's going to actually try and change, I will support him. As I said already, this is the first time he has actually admitted that he has a problem and that it might be his own fault. That's progress, and I'm giving him credit for finally breaking through that old mindset. Now I want to see that progress continue. But I also am not going to give anybody shit for still being skeptical. Given his history, he has rightfully brought that skepticism on himself.

If you go in to AA and announce "I've got some problems, and it's hard, and I've relapsed a few times but I really do want to get better I just don't know if I'm strong enough" then of course you're going to get support.

But if you go in and say "I don't have a problem, you're all just trying to drag me down but it ain't gonna work 'cause I'm awesome and you're all just jealous losers" they are absolutely not going to welcome you back to the next meeting.

You have to try. He hasn't been trying. He's been denying. That's really all there is to it. You can't help someone who doesn't want to change. And he obviously hasn't wanted to change because up until now he wouldn't even admit that something was wrong in the first place.

I support addicts who want to get help. Yes, it's hard. And yes, there will be setbacks. But as long as the desire to be better is there I will get behind just about anyone. You have to show me that desire is there, though, and TC hasn't so far.

Maybe if this wasn't the first time TC was told he had a problem. This has gone on for over a year.

He has a cycle.

He fucks up, he posts about how he's sad/pissed off at the system and how he's in trouble. He then says "I'm gonna change" and then a month or so later the cycle repeats.

I'm not going to feel sympathy for someone who has gone through this multiple times and still thinks everyone else is the problem, not him.

The guy can stop shooting himself in the foot. Driving drunk is also incredibly dangerous and a very selfish move. To do it multiple times also means you lose my sympathy.
