I think uber is cheaper than the yellow taxis, maybe they were comparing it to taking the subway?

Cabbies are kinda racist against Black people so that's something to be aware of, Parappa. If like 20 cabbies drive right by you before one stops... that's actually kinda normal.

UberX is about the same price as a cab. Uber Pool is cheaper.

I'd take a yellow taxi first. Don't have to worry about surge pricing.

Honestly unless you are in a huge rush subway and buses are the way to go. And with google maps it'll tell you exactly what to do and what time and everything

The cabbies (almost none of whom are white, and most of whom were not even born in the U.S.) discriminate against black passengers because they consistently tip less than passengers of other races. In fact, they tip about half as much on average according to this study from Yale.

Just took an Uber from the UES to downtown, and it was $28. Same as a yellow cab.

BTW, for anyone wanting a good deal in NYC, Via (the app) is the way to go. Fixed fare of $7 for any trips within Manhattan below 125th St. It's like Uber Pool in that it can pick up other people on the way, but it's the best deal outside of public transit.

I use Lyft exclusively because the prices are always cheaper.

LyftLine is even cheaper, although you'll most likely be sharing the ride with someone.

Uber and cabs are about the same in NYC. The benefit of Uber is the convenience of getting one when the weather is shit.

Subway is still the cheapest and used to be the fastest way to get around, but now its a mess
