The deathknell was the pushback when they tried to make it a pack-in with new systems and customers objected to the added cost. The problem with the Kinect is that it was never going to have a huge amount of support and it's a bit too expensive.

The Vita comparison doesn't really seem apt, though. Maybe the PSTV, though, since that was a wonky decision.

Maybe the shine off the turd that is PUBG is coming off. (Player Unknown's Battleground)

People scream about the PC Master Race, but a game like PUBG is the perfect traget for hackers, cheats, and the villainy of the scum riddled Internet.

Granted the game is "Technically" in beta or early access, so it's not a finished product. I don't think it ever will be a completely finished game. That's just my opinion.

Truth is the developers need to fix the lag, glitches, match making, exploits, the loot system, and rhe graphics before adding additional content. Because it doesn't matter how strong your walls are if the foundation is a mess.

Think I saw maybe 10 seconds of Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (nonsensical title, by the way) and that was more than enough to know it's a game I would never have any interest in. Another one of those open world DayZ type games; pass.

Mario, on the other hand, looks really great. Excited to play it when I have time.

To be fair, I've never actually seen a single hacker (although that doesn't stop people form being suspicious), and I've played for 100+ hours of PUBG. Besides, hacking is just a sort of what you need to learn to live with on PC, it's equivalent of getting robbed, yes it sucks, but it's not ever time you go outside.

The question is what you want out of something, and what you're giving up for it. I really enjoy the mechanics of PUBG, I like a semi-random map, I like decision making for engagements, I like choosing when to take my time and when to be pushed along, I like being able to play with friends, and I like a competitive atmosphere.
I don't get that at all from any other game at the moment, the game is broken, yes. Currently though, it's not that bad, the dev's have honestly been working really hard on the game, and you can see it. You can easily play 5+ matches and come across one major glitch during that time.

I don't like the lootbox system either, I think it's bad.

Maybe for low-tier games with weak servers. It's basically non-existent with actual big title games.

Like, LoL is the biggest game in the world, and it's basically impossible to hack.

I thought you were talking about strictly competitive games. Obviously, you can hack games that aren't entirely server-side. The scope of what you can do varies, though.

So, it looks like Nintendo will be giving the NES Classic another go:

https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/26/16553374/nintendo-switch-supply-reggie-fils-aime-interview

The "Nintendo artificially restricting demand" argument never made any sense (since there's nothing to gain by hyping what already is insanely over-hyped, and guaranteed to sell), but as I thought, seems to just be a mix of being over-cautious, or incompetent in reading the pulse on how popular their stuff is. Or, as Reggie suggested, they might have have legit stupid supply chain problems.

Yeah, it always sounded like a crock of shit. Unless Nintendo was witholding a supply to sell on the aftermarket, there was no profit to be made through such a strategy.

Sorry, I worded that wrong (I'm tired, long film day). Like, online/competitive ONLY. Games only server side. So anything with an off-line, single player mode basically doesn't count.

To also be fair, I won't admit I know the extent of possible hacking in all these games. You can hack in SCII multi-player?

Oh sure, maphacks to let you see the entire map, alerting you when the opponent is about to drop you, what sort of tech they are researching so you can counter it, even ai to help you split better against certain units to basically ignore them. It's pretty hard to get an infinite money hack going, because it's obvious as hell, but you can absolutely hack very subtly.
It's not a, "do this and immediately win" sort of hack, but you can absolutely get a crazy unfair advantage.

I was big into competitive SC2 for a while, I still follow what's going on slightly, but not as much.

A blatant Pokemon Go knockoff has been getting great visibility thanks to Niantic's attempts to shut them down

https://www.forbes.com/sites/curtissilver/2017/10/26/niantic-allegedly-not-pleased-that-pokemon-go-lookalike-draconius-go-exists/#3eab4bfe7577

Downloaded the game out of curiosity and not only have they copied the basic interface, but even the microtransactions page looks almost the same right down to the mtx pricing models.

Their defense is also hilarious:
. However, we didn't use their coding or graphics when developing our product, it's absolutely original.

Everything I've seen so far is the palette-swap equivalent of lazy piracy. They even have the capture screen like PoGo's (involving throwing a ball and trying to get it into a shrinking circle -- although curve throws don't seem to be an option), the use of a buddy system, etc. The *only* difference I've seen so far is a few different menus and some allusion to artifacts.

Of course, one notable difference is the character creation page which offers less customization and zero mtx.... which is an oversight on their part >_> Gotta mtx everything!

I've been sick and very busy for the last few days. I spent Saturday with my long lost father, who is probably insane from the years of drug and alcohol abuse. He's not as sober as he thinks. He polished off a bottle of wine in about half an hour, and passed out in my chair with my cat on top of him. At least he doesn't smoke crack any longer; so a win for everyone I guess.

As for the sick part, I'm having severe allergies and sinus headaches. It's getting better, but up until 3 hours ago I felt like grim death. I took some advill and passed out, and I woke up feeling a lot better. However, my headache is coming back as I type this.

In great news my leg is all healed up, and I got cast for my robot leg this afternoon. It will be ready next week, and I can start rehab and walking again. No more wheelchair, well more wheelchair for a while, but I should be walking in a few months. Eventually I will be back to normal. I would be more excited, but i feel terrible so... back to bed.

Wound up reading the details of the Bat-embargo after watching a clip from "The Doomsday Sanction" (Justice League Unlimited).

http://dcau.wikia.com/wiki/Bat-embargo

While I had heard of it before, the sheer stupidity of the measure hadn't really struck me and I never connected it with other stuff it affected (specifically replacing Batman rogues in JLU, often with original counterparts). One case was Hugo Strange -- who briefly cameo'd in a role as a director at Cadmus -- who was replaced by a then-unnamed doctor.

http://dcau.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Moon

It also reminded me of the general annoyance of several rogues being omitted from The Batman, even though I was fairly aware that their absence was supposedly connected to Nolan trilogy (ie, Scarecrow, Two-Face, etc). And, in general, I wish they'd done more with The Batman since it was a surprisingly good rendition of Batman once you got past the animation style.

Scarlett mentioned that "This is how empires fall." She was referencing the huge sexual harassment scandals brewing in Hollywood right now. From Kevin Spacey, Andy Dick, and now Dustin Hoffman and Brett Ratner.

It's finally time for all these scumbags to be put in their place, and the old boy's Hollywood Club lifestyle to go away, or at least get reduced into isolated instances.

I am also not going to jump the gun too quick because some of these claims might not be real. There are all types of lowlife jerks out there lying to get famous or make a quick buck on the names of the more famous. So, we do have to take all of this with a bit of caution before grabbing our pitchforks and screaming from our soap boxes. Nevertheless, hopefully change is the end result, and this can begin to put an end to casting couches, and the sexual favors system.

Realistically those things probably will never change, but if more people step forward maybe some good can come from all of this.

Plus a lot of these allegations have been out there for years. You'll hear claims of cults of pedophiles, etc, in Hollywood which people dismiss. Hollywood is one of those things which we're broadly aware of but nobody really takes claims seriously. Intuitively, though, you know there HAS to be widespread abuse given the nature of the industry. However, we assign innocuous terms like "casting couch" to downplay serious predatory behaviors and abuses of power.

Apparently Odyssey has already sold 2 million copies, which is like a 30% attachment base for the Switch, which is bonkers. Hard to deny that the console is having a very impressive year. New details on Xenoblade 2 will also be out in a few days.

Just that, they are of the nature that if they ever got out or leaked out, context of the photos could give enough clues leading back to me. Even if I edit myself out.

Which, ultimately, is likely not a huge deal. Most of the photos aren't on set, so I wouldn't be breaking an NDA or anything by disclosing where we are not at work, but I'd still want to get her permission first, at least. And I'd still probably edit myself out, anyways, rendering the proof of these photos being authentic moot anyways.

So... a couple early impressions with Last Recode:

- The text has changed when people are talking in scenes. It's largely generic and lacking in flavor, with the font that was chosen.
- I feel like Pi's boobs were made even bigger. Like, they're almost not boobs any more but a second pair of fists just jutting out of her chest. <_<;
- The affection meter has been changed from a sphere in the middle to a heart; the encircling dots remain the same. This is different, to be sure, and possibly stands out a little better, though nowhere as much as what was taken away from the cutscene text.

So I'm going in as I play the ps4 version, and I'm taking notes of things, such as trophy availability on the ps4 version and the fact that I'm leveling up just slightly faster in Last Recode than I did in the ps2 release.

Like Haseo just became guildmaster, and I'm about 2/3 of a level (or more) higher than normal due to base exp alone. We'll see how much faster he hits the cap in Rebirth, I suppose, when I get there. *shrugs*

Son of a biscuit. Bendis left Marvel. I am sure they backed up the damn Brinks truck up to his house. I don't blame him for taking the money and leaving. I look at this two ways.

1. Bendis leaving is good necause sometimes a change of scenery is a good thing. He pcould also write some great Batman and Superman stories. (And Superman needs a lot of work.) Leaving Marvel frees them from Bendis writing so much, and free up other writers to do new work. Plus Bendis is very verbose, and his writing style isn't always best for certain characters or stories. (Civil War II.) Which means he is not auto assigned to big cross overs that he isn't suited to write. Basically, he is DC's problem now.

2. Bendis leaving is bad because he writes so much that other writers get to stay longer on books they care about, and can develop story arcs and characters. It's bad because his Spider-Man work is so good, and Spider-Man is their most important character. Sales could dip and Dan Slott now has to pull more Spider-Man weight than ever before. It is also bad because he is a big name, and helped create two imporyant characters, Jessica Jones and Miles Morales.

I guess we shall see how this shakes out.

Right now I'm wishing that I hadn't bought *any* Warcraft Mystery Minis until now since, even though I never once paid MSRP (thanks to sales and clearances), I stopped at my local Goodwill tonight and they had stacks of the blindboxed figures on sale for a buck each. Guess the area Target donated what they refused to sell at a lower price, something I've noticed at other times as well.

At any rate, bought a few more because, well, orc figurines. And, of course, out of the four boxes I bought (I should have just grabbed more), not one was an orc. I got 2 armored knights (I think Lothar?), the black chick, and I forget the fourth.

Granted, even if I stopped back tomorrow, they'll have probably sold the rest by then. Had I opened the packs in the parking lot, I could have run back in.

Still busy, not really reading any posts here yet (going to have a huge backlog when I do, grr).

But I just had to post this for Wave:

http://www.cbr.com/tag/if-her-hair-was-still-red

It's a collection of articles by Brian Cronin, who's basically going through the entire history of Mary Jane in the Spider-Man comics, starting from her first appearance.

It's kind of an interesting perspective, especially since it tends to underline something that other people have pointed out over the years - namely, as much as people who read the comic in the 80s/90s tend to think of Mary Jane as the One True Destined waifu for Spider-Man, she really wasn't for a long time in the early years (and even after Gwen died, she still wasn't really "number one" for years, which is why you get stuff like Jean DeWolff).

You're just lucky that I actually like you and that you're secretly my son, or I probably would have ignored it.

(Also, it's not really a weird pride thing, it goes back to ye olden days of the board and some moderately annoying stuff where a few trolls were basically just pestering me to try and bother me - and let's be honest, implied trolling is still a large reason for a lot of mentions these days - so I decided just to knee-jerk ignore that sort of thing. I still do respond to PMs, though, so that's probably the best way to ask me something specific if you actually need to.)

...but that's kind of immaterial, because neither of those were the war between Greece and Persia you're alluding to. THAT war (or wars, because again, there's technically two) is/are here:

So, I'm planning on running a DnD game set in the late Greek early Roman Era (I thew the year down at around 200BC). Because it's a game and not a reinactment, time is much more... flexible for when stuff happened.

Would have to be extremely flexible, since Marathon happened in 490 BC and Thermopylae happened in 480 BC. By 200 BC, "Persia" was more or less dead as we think of it - at least in the vein of the empire of Cyrus, Darius, and Xerxes (ie, the "Achaemenid Empire").

And so was Greece, to some extent - by that point Rome was already growing into the dominant Mediterranean power of the era, and biting off chunks of Greek colonies in Italy. Pyrrhus - of Pyrrhic Victory fame - was already fighting the Romans around 300 BC or so, and most of mainland Greece was firmly conquered around 150 BC. And by 200 BC, Rome had already fought two of the three Punic Wars against Carthage.

Most of what we think of as the Greek/Persian wars happen closer to 500 BC, and the Peloponnesian Wars around 400 BC. After the Peloponnesian Wars Greece is basically broken as a major power (ie, what we think of as "Classical Greece" pretty much ends around 400 BC), which is what allows Philip to eventually conquer most of it and establish the Macedonian Empire.

As an aside, 400 BC is also around the time when the "March of the Ten Thousand" happens, as described in Xenophon's Anabasis - aka, the history that the movie The Warriors was loosely based on. It's probably the real capping stone on Greek-Persian interaction during the era:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Thousand_(Greek)

By 300 BC, Alexander had pretty much already broken the spine of Persia as an empire and set the foundations for what would become the Seleucid Empire. Parts of that and what was left of Persia would eventually evolve into the Parthian Empire (which would be a semi-rival to Rome for most of its later years, but "Persia" was pretty much dead.

If you really want to do a "Holy shit, Xerxes' kid is coming back for revenge!" sort of setting, you'd be better off setting it sometime around 450 BC. Or maybe shortly after 400 BC, with the logic that the Greeks fighting among themselves weakens them enough to make them an enticing target for the Persians (since they were already dabbling in the civil war anyway). But the Persians had problems of their own at that point (see also the aforementioned Ten Thousand incident), so they might not have been in a position to capitalize.

Of course, if you're looking for an alt history point of divergence to play off, here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darius_II
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xerxes_II_of_Persia

Have an alternate timeline in which Xerxes II survives as emperor, and establishes a stronger empire rather than being assassinated. Removing Darius II from the succession potentially eliminates the later civil war, and ultimately strengthens Persia in time for Greece's own civil war. Persia sides with Sparta against Athens (as happened in our world), but then aggressively pursue their own agenda against Sparta. The end result is bitter Greek enemies who've just finished fighting each other being forced to stand against a dominant foreign power.

For bonus irony, make it a three-sided war where Sparta and Athens both try to stand against Persia while simultaneously continuing hostility against each other (rather than being forced to ally), or have a third force rise attempting to capitalize on the conflict to settle scores with Sparta AND Athens (Corinth would be a good choice), at which point the resulting conflict could effectively be described as BOTH the "Third Peloponnesian War" AND the "Third Persian War".

Is there anything else going on around that time period I should know about that would be fun to do research on?

Aside from what I've already mentioned/linked to, Wikipedia is absolutely your best friend in the entire world when it comes to historical research for RPGs:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_Greece
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellenistic_period

That should give you most of what you need in local terms (or at least give you the tools to expand on what you have). In more global terms, these are probably the four main hotspots that might affect a campaign like you're discussing (and if you center it around 400 BC rather than 200 BC):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achaemenid_Empire
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Republic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Carthage#Sicilian_Wars
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Late_Period_of_ancient_Egypt

You could always go farther afield (like Warring States Era China or the rising Mayan Empire), but that's a bit more of a stretch (and probably not what you're looking for).

If you're really dead-set on forcing the setting into 200 BC without regard for actual world events, you're going to be doing a lot of retconning and alt history tinkering, which makes it harder to point to specific info that would be helpful. Though it's worth noting that you can do stuff like THIS on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/200_BC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/200s_BC_(decade)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2nd_century_BC

Also, if you're willing to invest, there's always this as a potential quick and dirty source:

http://www.amazon.com/GURPS-Greece-Jon-Zeigler/dp/1556340966

(I actually own it, and could probably go over the table of contents for you if you were really interested in maybe buying it.)

Actually, I suppose you could work a Persian conquest of Greece angle in 200 BC, come to think of it. You'd mostly just be substituting the Seleucids instead of Rome, and moving the conquest up about 50 or so years. In that case, your main point of divergence would be the RomanSeleucid War:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seleucid_Empire
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman%E2%80%93Seleucid_War
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Magnesia

Which could be interesting, but would take a fair amount of jiggering to work. But in an alternate framework where the Seleucid Empire wins (and bites off large chunks of the nascent Roman dominion in a mirror image of what actually happened), it would set up a scenario in which Seleucia pincers Greece and conquers it in much the same way Rome did in our world. It also opens the door to Carthage likely purusing a war of vengeance against a weakened Rome ("Roma Delenda Est"?), with the Third Punic War ending opposite as well (with Carthage dominant and Rome broken).

Your likely outcome there is that Carthage and Seleucia wind up splitting the Mediterranean, with a Carthaginian Empire in the west and Seleucia to the east (with Seleucia potentially becoming the political and cultural center of the world instead of Rome). You'd likely also have a bit of a flipped political balance as well, with Seleucia basically being the "Rome" of this world while Carthage would be more like what Seleucia/Parthia was to Rome in our timeline.

(Then for bonus points, consider that Judea would almost certainly be a territory of Seleucia in this reality, which could leave us with Jewish revolts against their "Persian" masters, with a rising Christianity in opposition to Zoroastrianism - or rooted IN it - as a potential view of what the future might hold.)

The downside of that is that the Seleucids really weren't "Persian" in any way we think of it (they were basically Greeks by way of Alexander, in the same way the Ptolemies were in Egypt a la Cleopatra):

Let me look that up and see what happened...
Oh shit
The democracy of Athens is overthrown by the oligarchic extremists, Antiphon, Theramenes, Peisander and Phrynichus in an effort by the oligarchists to exert more control over the conduct of the war with Sparta and its allies. A "Council of Four Hundred" is set up.

Hello plot.

Oh also, how likely are the Gauls going to be poking and proding? We're they doing that constantly, or a special time?

and let's be honest, implied trolling is still a large reason for a lot of mentions these days

Probably most of the reason.
