undermine the politics at hand?

Specifically, I'm talking about the popular image many have of folks like Al Gore, George Clooney, Leonardo Dicaprio as the biggest voices on the subject of global warming.

Now, I'm not going to criticize anyone for using their platform to speak out on an issue, especially one as important as this. But the common retort, and it ain't wrong, is that wealthy celebrities emit more carbon in a single jet ride than most folks will do in a year. The right wing narrative now often centers on figures like Gore as hypocritical given their personal consumption. (An alternative narrative might draw a connection here about inequality and the climate, but this does not get much play in the public discourse.)

I don't know what point I'm really making here. Discuss.

Celebrities are the biggest virtue signaling "do as I say but not as I do" hypocrites out there.

What's new?

No I'd definitely say so. They're just not as numerous.

They are citizens, too, and are allowed to speak their minds.

I was watching an interview with Aisha Tyler where she basically said, "people criticize me for being vocal because I'm just a celebrity, but I'm a citizen too, so why can't I state my opinion like everyone else?". I tend to agree with her.

Oh nobody is saying that they can't state their opinion. It's just that too many of them are disconnected from ordinary people, and they never practice what they preach.

Take the writer of Harry potter and the refugee crisis. She constantly virtue signals how she loves the refugees and how everybody who doesn't want them in their country/city/town is scum, BUT she's rich as fuck and has massive reach to help them, and she doesn't. She has multiple mansions and she doesn't even take 1 refugee family in. How much money has she donated for them if at all?

That's what people complain about. We ordinary people don't like being talked down to by unaware celebs.

Supporting refugees and having them live in your home are completely separate issues. How many pro-lifers adopt children since they care about them so much?

denial of climate change is because most of our country to be blunt is comically anti intellectual and really doesn't realize how badly major economies (we being the biggest perpetrators) has polluted the air, a segment doesn't want to believe it because we love our huge houses and big SUVS and trucks and don't want to downgrade to more fuel efficient smaller versions of both, and of course big business doesn't like it because it fucks with their money.
