Higher framerate is better than higher resolution. After 144Hz you can't go back to measly 60.

It's diminishing returns above 60fps IMO. Id rather see 60 frames of decent textures per second than 144 frames off ass textures per second.

My 1440P/144hz/Gsync display is the sweet spot. They don't make TVs that way tho.

^has never played in 144Hz

I own a 144hz monitor and a PC decent enough to push 144hz in all but the latest games so yes, I have.

60fps is plenty, I'd rather the textures look good. Especially if you have Freesync / Gsync.

If you're playing certain shooters at a tournament level, equipment matters

Where did I say tournament level competitive anything?

I'm talking about your average PC gamer, not the "pro" gamers. Of course it matters at that level, thanks for stating the obvious.

It's honestly a bummer that resolution is the one graphics gimmicks that keeps getting pushed above everything else.

Games would look so much better with better framerates, textures, HDR, anti-aliasing, bigger draw distance and more dynamic objects on screen.

But noooooo, let's push for 4K instead.

This is dumb. Resolution is dynamic on PC. It's not a gimmick being pushed, it's an option that's selectable. Kind of like how it's been for like 25 years.

Textures aren't very resource expensive unless you count storage and vram. You're waiting on better compression methods here unless you want games even bigger than they are today. See ultra Fallout textures... They're like 30GB.

HDR implementation and quality is fragmented as all hell. You have TVs that are quote HDR ready but don't have a peak brightness high enough to deliver a good HDR picture. And even then, you have practically zero HDR computer monitors and a lot of HDR TV sets with high input lag in HDR mode. Then you have HDR 10 and Dolby Vision that the generals public can't be arsed to know what are.

Higher frame rates should always be a priority but I'm referring to PC where often your framerates are only limited by your hardware.

Anti aliasing in your argument is stupid... The best form of anti aliasing is higher resolutions or down sampling.

Dynamic objects on screen... Okay?

Yeah, and how do those consoles run games? Is it the exact same as the regular versions except in upscaled 4K and 30 fps? Thanks for making an argument that destroys your own I guess.

wat

I don't think you understand that most of your qualms are with hardware manufacturers and software engineers outside of the gaming industry.

You want higher resolution/quality textures but you probably don't want games to be 150GB. Also, while current gen consoles are in a MUCH better position than last gen consoles were from a VRAM standpoint there are still limitations. Especially since IIRC both XBX and PS4 share memory between the CPU and GPU. The ONLY thing that textures are taxing on is vram and storage. If you want these assets to be of a higher quality you should explain what you mean because "muh better textures" is a pretty shit and nebulous demand. I'd go so far as to say most modern games are REALLY only limited in this department by artistry and attention to detail not hardware. Uncharted 2 had incredible textures on incredibly shit hardware.

HDR is finding its way into games and that's great. What's not great is that you have "HDR ready" sets that don't come anywhere close to the peak brightness rating to look as intended. This is a problem with the TV and monitor industry, not the gaming industry.

In fact, you didn't reply to any of my actual points. I'm starting to think you can't keep up.

Nah dude, it's actually very simple and it's you who's COMPLETELY missing the point.

Here's the deal in bullet points to make it easier on you.

1. AAA games are made for consoles first, this is what drives the industry forward like it or not
2. Game developers need to optimize games for consoles with set parameters, you can't change them which is why I ignore most of your nonsense posting.
3. These same developers push resolution and leave everything else in the dirt.

I''d rather have games with better textures, framerates and stuff going on on-screen at 1080p but instead the focus is on 4K.

I wasn't responding to someone saying they want higher resolutions. I was responding to Link HT who seems to be having a different conversation entirely. My whole, and pretty much only interest, is in PC.

He made a post saying "y is all dis focus on resolution instead of *list of dumb things*" and I said "Irrelevant, resolution on PC is dynamic/user selectable." Higher resolutions on PC don't come at the expense of other things. You have a choice and the only limit is the effort put forth by devs and the graphics hardware you're using.

Nice argument, bro. What you can't seem to comprehend is that PC gaming is made up of shitty console ports so we're all in this together ;)
