I'm playing Mother now and it's kind of a piece of shit and I'd like to know if Earthbound is the same way before I bother playing it.

Imo Mother is better.

Oh man, where do I start?

- The encounter rate is absolutely insane, and the run option works like maybe half the time if not less
- Extremely vague in informing the player what they have to do (to the point where I'm just using a guide)
- Combat is boring
- The world is a chore to navigate when it's filled with open spaces that look the same

EB is still great but has flaws.

Mother 3 is probably the best Japan only game ever made.

Earthbound Zero or Mother 1 for the NES has aged terribly. It's kind of like old some old PC RPG's from the 80's, it was once a good example of what they could achieve with an open world that now feels tedious and looks awful due to all the progression we have had since.

Earthbound for the SNES is still a great game due to the fact that it has simply aged a lot better. It came out in an era where they really had 2D games down to a science and had the ability to give them graphics and sound that makes them still fun and appealing even today.

Compared to Mother you likely get in just as many battles, however I always felt it was easier to over level in Earthbound leading to an instant win instead of a battle.

Earthbound is a lot more in your face about where to go, however there are a few points in the game where you're likely to wonder for a bit.

Combat is very similar, but a little more refined. Not a huge step up.

The world in Earthbound is actually on of the things I like most about it. It's not as lively as I would like at times but each town feels unique and has it's own atmosphere.

Over all I would say give it a try, but like... if you buying it from somewhere maybe don't as there is a decent chance that what you dislike from Mother will carry over into Earthbound.

No no much better.

Honestly, Mother 1 just feels like a beta version of Earthbound, where Earthbound is just a much more refined, balanced, and improved, better looking and sounding version of the same experience.

Oh, I'm already over leveled in Mother (I'm playing the GBA version and using the easy ring because why not?).

I don't mind having to think critically about the next course of action, but Mother didn't say anything about the melodies or even what I was really ever supposed to be doing. Up until the point I started using a guide, I was just pretty much going to every spot on the map I could go and interacting with everything, which leads to a lot of tedium IMO.

Yeah NES games tend to be really cryptic like that.

Earthbound is literally Mother + a bunch of extra stupid shit that doesn't add anything of value to the game. The only improvement Earthbound made was graphics and that was only barely.
