people today tend to use it like it's ethnicity. there is even a commercial for Ancestry.com where a lady uses it that way. and my landlord told me "there is people from all nationalities in this building"

it bugs me when people misuse that word

Jokes aside people definitely misuse the word "nationality."

I get asked the question 1-3 a year. When I respond with "american" they respond, "you know what I mean."

I know what they are always getting at but it bugs me. I hate they use the word nationality instead of ethnicity or even race is far more suitable.

because there are over 300 countries on earth and if there was one of every nationality, it would mean every single tenant in my building is from a different country, and not just FROM the county but a citizen of it, but for some odd reason living in an apartment in america. and also, I doubt someone from North Korea lives in my building.

Nationality means you have citizenship of that country. ethnicity is your race or culture or ancestry
