Spend your money on whatever you want to spend it on. You don't need to attempt to justify it to anyone here

I feel like if it's a hobby you need to justify whether you enjoy it or not (and that's pretty much it) but eh what do I know

I've spent well over 1k on dance games and don't regret it at all. Might even be closer to 10k if you count tournament expenses and that's sort of a scary thought but those are largely social events for me anyway.

Granted this is over the course of many years - I also haven't stopped and don't plan to soon but who knows

Had I kept going with rhythm games I would have become "one of those Rock Band people" for sure.

I have probably close to $1000 in Rock Band songs.

Is Rock Band still good? I gave up on the rhythm genre when Activision got involved, and frankly I should have given up on Blizzard for the same reason.

I had a buddy over who just randomly picked up GH and warmed up by 5 starring random songs on expert, then he almost full combo'd TTFIF and Jordan. I was blown away.

If I had a thousand to spend on a game I'd do it, but I'm poor, and I have no money. I might not even make rent this month.

It's his money he can do w.e he wants with it.

If you aren't enjoying something anymore, give it up and move on. I think the issue here is that some people feel like they need to (over)spend to enjoy in the first place.

I could see myself spending 1k on a game if it was a solid thing I kept coming back to and had a subscription model. Haven't started FFXIV though.

Is it ok to spend 6k on a single gaming event though?

Not gonna do that.

Unexpected pet medical costs aren't very fun. This isn't normally an issue but I get payed a few days after rent is due, and my landlord is an asshole

I'll find a way.

If it's not normally an issue, let the landlord know that the cost of trying to evict you over nonpayment and find a new tenant would be far greater than the time cost of just waiting a few extra days for the rent once.

No video game is remotely worth $1k. If we're talking about card packs/gacha games here, that's gambling problem territory.

How do you do this?
Space whaling?

There's only a handful of games I could see anyone spending 1K on.
MMOs after years is one, but that takes years. Quitting WoW now as a vanilla player would be doing this, but...

The other is like...
Warhammer, but that's a Tabletop and you don't spend 1k on it, you spend 40k.

Can we talk more about the guy that spent 1000 dollars to play Paper Mario and then hated it?

I don't know even know which one is more outrageous.

Yeah, it's the same old Rock Band.

I sure wish they'd update the old songs to work in 4 faster, but it's the best party video game outside of Jackbox.

I'd never spend that much on any 1 game. $1,000 could get you a really nice variety of games. Also there are people out there that spend way too much on mobile games. I saw at least one guy on Reddit who spent like $5,000 on one DBZ Dokkan Battle banner

For some people, spending $1000 on a game is easy and worth it.

You can't really say what someone else's money is worth to them.

I spent about that amount for Paper Mario 2, realized that I hated it and stopped playing. So yes if you don't like the game, just stop playing.

You spend 1000 dollars on Paper Mario Thousand Year Door?

Whoops for some reason I read this as 100 dollars. Yeah 1K a bit to much for a game unless it's a really rare game that will go upp in value.

Over the course of 5 years, on mobile games, I probably have spent $1k.

It honestly depends if it has value to you but generally, yeah it's fine to quit and might be good to if you can't control your spending habits.

This is just my opinion, but I think money is worth what it's worth, and someone's spending habits can deviate from that. Even if you have millions of dollars, it doesn't suddenly make mobile games or Hearthstone a wiser investment.

My spending limit on a gacha would be $100 per character/item during event. That amount gives me very low chance of getting it, so I never bother. I can spend more but at that point I'd rather just spend the money on physical items.

It's not really that low. Typical gacha the drop rate on a specific character/whatever is 1%. $100 will give you somewhere in the realm of 30-40 draws typically, more if you had some foresight and bought via sales in advance. That's in the ballpark of a 1/3 chance of getting the thing you want, which isn't terrible. Combined with sales and self restraint on using the free currency you can easily get well above 50% on getting what you want as long as you aren't playing a super cheap ass gacha. Some are even more generous than that.

The main concern is limiting how many characters/items you attempt to get. But yeah I don't regret dumping some cash into gachas and it's not like I make a ton of money. I get by but yeah.

Why are you looking at it as an investment? Games are normally a passtime or hobby, not an investment.

If someone spends 1000 on hearthstone and gets $1000 worth of fun out of it, how can you say it wasn't worth it for that person. It's completely subjective.

if you've already spent $1000, and you hate the game, you should get out ASAP before you end up spending more

(also man I thought I was a big spender for dropping ~$70 on Kingdom of Loathing in the year and a half I played)
