Redundant Text

My wife and I were discussing whether or not this is a normal thing for people to do. Her family, for instance, often brings desserts to restaurants when celebrating a birthday. Is this normal or a weird thing to do?

This gives me a good idea for a restaurant.

I will make one, and advertise that people can bring their own ingredients, and cook their own meals, all while they pay me to do that.

Nothing wrong with bringing a cake or something for a birthday.

a cake for a birthday is fine, anything else is rude.

since restaurants often give free desert on someones birthday they probably don't mind if you bring a cake.

I didn't even think of that. Yeah I brought in stuff like that in before. Mainly because I just bought the item and then my friends decide they want to meet lol

The only context I could see myself doing that is if I'm out with friends and we wanted to eat at two different fast food restaurants, and we went to mine first.

rude

McDonald's charging for water in the middle of the Arizona desert was rude, so I was boycotting them. When my high school track team's bus stopped at McD's after a meet, a few of us ran to the BK across the street instead and brought it back.

No. But I do understand that some people bring cakes for birthdays. And I think that's ok. Anything more than that is rude.

Also, once I was at Caribou Coffee and my sister met me there bringing a doughnut from Krispy Kreme. The staff didn't mind as she bought her drink from them and I'm a regular customer.

I've never eaten at a proper restaurant but if I did I'd expect to pay premium prices. If I didn't want to pay that amount of cash I'd eat elsewhere. I see no point in eating out if you're bringing your own food. Plus it would feel like you're treating the restaurant as a drop in centre I'd imagine.

Edit: Cakes for celebrations is a exception to this rule.

Yup. On travel for work, and my coworker and I couldn't agree on what restaurant to get lunch from, so I got mine to go and ate with him at the restaurant he ordered from.

Also in general I have no qualms bringing in my own bottled drink when going out for lunch.

Good for you guys, for doing that years ago! I think I would've done the same, if I had been annoyed about McDonald's for some of their practices. They also do the crap of charging if you request extra sauces, as well. :( One McDonald's that's within a gas station is famous for charging something like 15-20 cents(hadn't been there in a while, I don't know what price in cents it's at now) per each ketchup packet outside Gene and Jude's in River Grove, IL, since Gene and Jude's does NOT serve ketchup whatsoever. Even if you only wanted to get an order of fries.
