They observe and make conclusions. Engineers, similarly, have a stereotype of being asocial or awkward (as students at least).
Take sociologists for example, they observe the way people act and report on it. Is a human element being lost there? It's like they look at people through microscopes instead of truly being one with the human element. --- Don't tease the octopus, kids! ... Copied to Clipboard!

I dunno, the scientists I know personally (neuroscience) are all pretty sociable people but I'm not sure if that's representative

I mean, there's the whole narrative about elites at universities now-a-days. I think most people just don't realize they are talking about scientists when they spout that rhetoric.
