I think the media is the root of most of America's issues. They stir up discord, politically and socially. Lots of people in this thread have mentioned how the divide between the left and the right is the biggest issue, but did you consider what the cause of that divide is? I would argue that the media is the biggest contributor to that divide. They make both sides look far worse than they actually are to the other side. They misrepresent both Democrats and Republicans.

undermining of our republic by economic elites

the recent leak that the GOP was promised 400m by the kochs if and only if they get 'healthcare reform and tax reform' passed is disgusting and reflects a total lack of regard for their voters and exclusive support for campaign financiers

that the democratic party's attempt to create a public option was shot down because two dem senators (who got a ton of money from the insurance industry) shows that they are not immune to this either.

The liberals make for phenomenal entertainment, but I'm really not that worried about them causing any significant damage. The rioting, vandalism, and looting is a problem with the left, but I think that is easily manageable. It only happens in liberal bastions because the authority won't allow law enforcement to do their job. I don't care if they destroy their own shit.

Taxes, the economy, and job growth are my biggest concerns.

I mean, both sides have been moving away from the center so it's kinda weird to say only one has, even if they are the one who has moved farther from the center overall

actually, I'm not even sure how true that is

http://www.people-press.org/2014/06/12/political-polarization-in-the-american-public/

the GOP had a fairly significant drift to the center that the democrats never really experienced -- or rather, had already experienced by 1994

I'm with Darkman. Selfish elites are our biggest problem. The question is how do we deal with it without extreme vigilantism.

the question is 'how do we deal with it before extreme vigilantism starts happening', actually.

there's a reason the koch family lives in a secure compound.

fwiw, I think represent.us has a solid solution:

the bait i was referring to was the idea that the media are the cause of political conflict in america because they report on what our leaders are actually doing

This is a good answer, but the power of the media is a symptom of a larger problem. What's the solution to for-profit media? State news outlets?

No, the larger issue is education. Public education is ostensibly built on the Socratic method, but far too many people choose only to question authority (and at times or forums where exigency renders that inappropriate). Meanwhile, they'll watch a heavily edited 8-second video and can't be bothered to ask what happened before the camera started recording. Asking to allow time for a proper investigation is deemed irrational. Clearly, all such videos should be taken at face value as long as they are aired by the echo chamber of the viewer's choosing.

The education system is actually not that bad, for those who choose and are able to take advantage of it. The still larger problem there is a culture that doesn't value education enough. You need look no further than CE to find college students, and even graduates, who can't see the purpose of "gen ed" classes not directly related to their majors. To them, education is nothing more than job training, or worse, a box that needs to be checked so they can add one line to a resume. We're much more concerned with wealth and materialism, particularly in the short term. We want instant gratification and fat bankrolls, and to hell with the ability to think critically.

tl;dr: our culture sucks.

yeah, that's more of an 'us' problem than a media problem, though. people like soundbytes and both late-night hosts and talk radio hosts are happy to pre-process the news in the way that they know their audience wants to hear it.
