Do you think Rob is too old to be a Firefighter?

30 y/o Rob Becerra, a "buff" 30 year old has been told he was TOO OLD to join the New York City Fire Department..and now he's PROTESTING!!

He reached his dog years in April and the FDNY has strict applications over the age of 28 and he says it's "age discrimination" in a plea to reconsider his case.

New York bans anyone who has reached their 29th birthday starting from the application process except for MILITARY veterans..the age cut off is the youngest in the country.

He said "I was told by the FDNY i am too OLD to be a Firefighter, it's something i've been thinking about doing besides the acting/modeling and animal activism. Talk about Age Discrimination...you telling me i can't do the job? i'm too old? An outrage at the least, especially for all the people in my age bracket (30-35)"

He said he wanted to become a firefighter to save ANIMALS from burning buildings...

The FDNY has made exceptions in the past after 2014 in a racial discrimination lawsuit alleging it passed over qualified black and hispanic applicants, those in their 30's and 40's were allowed to join.

Rob is a personal trainer who first considered being a FDNY 4 years ago for the department's last open exam in 2012..by the itme the FDNY offered another, he aged out.

He says "I work out 5 DAYS A WEEK. I can bench 315 pounts. I can run a mmile in under 6 minutes. I'm 5'11 an 170 pounds"

His girlfriend, Grace Navarro also vouched for him and said "Sometimes he'll pick me up and carry me for blocks"

The city council thought about raising the age cap from 28 to 36 as it was supported by the firefighters union but it was shot down.

Do you think 30 is too old? let's see what people think.

Rob - Too old

I don't really think the cutoff should be 29 but rules are rules so fair, next.

He should join the army. I'm certain they have a firefighters unit of some kind. And I believe the cut off age for them is 35.

It kinda seems like it's one of those fields where an age restriction is practical, given that you're expected to work a certain year stretch. Granted, 28 is a stupid cutoff.

Didn't even know there is a cut off age requirement for becoming a firefighter. Still I suppose it makes sense as the older you are the more at risk you are of health issues. I think 28 is setting the bar too low but rules are rules so fair, next.

This is ageism, 30 is prime age. That's like saying 30 year old is too old to be a cop.

This. He puts a lot of men ten years younger to shame.

I'd go as far as saying the overwhelming majority of men ten years younger.

In theory, an age cutoff makes sense. I can't think of any logical reason for that cutoff to be 28, though.

28 seems a somewhat arbitrary number, 30 would have made more sense, unless they have very high staff turnover each couple of years and most 28yo's are out within a few years anyway?

Why wouldn't they just have a fitness cutoff, instead of an age cutoff? Strength and endurance and crap is what they're actually after, right?
