I know the original Game Boy last a very long time. but modern systems switch out sooner now. And in just a few more years the 3DS will be a decade old. So I am wondering if we might hear an announcement in the next 3 years maybe.

Makes me wonder if Nintendo will even bother with the Switch now being a thing.

We might get an announcement within the next 3 years, with a system a year or two after. They probably won't announce anything immediately just because they're pushing the Switch.

The thing is that the Switch isn't a dedicated handheld and, unless they do a Switch Mini or something, it never will be. There are enough issues with the Switch on a logistical level that it won't ever appeal to a large segment of handheld owners although, in theory, things like parents with young kids might be lost to phones/tablets anyway.

Granted, given that Nintendo has mostly excelled at handheld systems lately, if they did fully invest in a console/handheld hybrid it wouldn't be the worst idea they've had (looking at you, Virtual Boy!)

The Switch is its own handheld/portable device, so I'm not sure they will. Doesn't make sense from a developer perspective, I wouldn't think.
